Two Great Ideas... ...Tot One Qreat Tratethaß X Operation Christmas Child % Join Hands Day WE'RE ON A MISSION. Our mission is to make this Christmas a little merrier for hundreds of children living in crisis situations around the world. We have a powerful ally for this mission: the good and loving people at Samaritan's Purse, the folks who conduct Operation Christmas Child. We have already made our first advances toward the successful completion of our mission. The Home Office has received dozens of gift-filled shoe boxes and more are arriving each week. The boxes contain all matter of small toys, personal items, school supplies and items of clothing. Although the wrapping and contents may differ from box to box, they all contain something which every childs needs: hope. You can deliver "hope in a shoe box" by participating in the WPA's Operation Christmas Child 2000 campaign. You can help in one of three ways: (1) fill a shoe box with items like those mentioned earlier; (2) donate such items which we can pack in shoe boxes; or (3) donate money which we can use to buy items. (Make your check payable to "William Penn Association.") All donations must be received at the Home Office by Sept. 15. If you can't deliver or ship your donation, give it to your branch president or coordinator by Sept. 1. Or, you can take your donation anytime to one of Operation Christmas Child's 114 collection centers located across the country. For the location of the center nearest you, call (828) 262-1980 or visit the web site at www.samaritan.org. For more information on how to prepare your shoe box, please see our March issue or call the Home Office toll-free at 1-800-848-7366. IN ITS 1998 ANNUAL report, the Points of Light Foundation reported this finding: "More than 85 percent of Americans agree that 'disconnection' is an underlying characteristic of many of our social problems. Whether fragmented by views about race, ethnicity, class, age, or values, Americans are losing trust in one another." Join Hands Day is the national day each year when Americans begin new relationships across generations. It is a special JOIN frOÄRO 1DSDAY [ it starts with us Sponsored by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies In Partnership with The Points of Light Foundation JUNE 17, 2000 time when young people and adults come together to plan and carry out projects that repair or improve problem conditions in their neighborhoods. They fix local problems, discover each other, and affirm the values of caring and working together. Consequently, this day is about more than worthwhile projects that give people the satisfaction of having helped. It is a day when youth and adults everywhere take a step toward more positive and constructive ways of living together. By now, your branch president or coordinator should have recieved the Join Hands Day Action Guide. The guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to participate in the day. Review this guide at your April branch meeting. Talk about how your branch could participate. You don't need a lot of people or a big project. Anything is better than nothing. If you need more ideas or help, call the Home Office at 1-800-848-7366, Ext. 135. Or, call the Join Hands Day Action Center at 1-877-OUR-1D AY. Your participation is vital. The more of us who become involved, the better it will be for our communties, our Association.. .and ourselves. Hilli» Pm Lilt. April 2000 3
