Benefits for Your Branch and the WPA • The WPA and all Fratemals will get credit each year as sponsors of a huge, national day that benefits communities and people's lives. • Millions of people will learn about fraternal societies-and the WPA- in a positive way. • Potential members will connect the WPA and fratemals with doing good. • The WPA and each branch will be able to take credit for the effort and the results. • WPA members, branches, field representatives and volunteers will feel a sense of pride in their accomplishments. • Sales representatives will find it easier to make "cold calls" and recruit members. branches have access to the Points of Light Foundation's many books, videos and training materials, they also have access to its 450 Volunteer Centers across America. These Centers are the key resource for volunteer involvement in many communities. Most Volunteer Centers are willing to work with WPA branches to unite them with partnering groups. Many Centers also want to become involved in developing and promoting Join Hands Day projects and to form deeper relationships with area fraternal branches. Fratemals will have an opportunity to do more good work... and get lots of help... and big time publicity. Fratemals will get known! How was the day created? Last July fraternal executives and Volunteer Center directors met to create a day that would capture the energy and attention of America. They constantly scoured media stories asking: "What problems are in the news these days?" One central problem is that people live in an agesegregated society. Most of the people we know and trust are our own age. Most of us don't mingle much with those of other ages and generations. Can this be changed? Fixed? In a day? Well, maybe not, but the team felt surely volunteers can make an impact as they bring young people and adults together across the generation gap. They also developed other important criteria for Join Hands Day projects: 0 Results need to be tangible, visual, something volunteers can see and appreciate. 0 Participation has to be simple: the projects must be easy to understand, organize and do. 0 Activities must be trackable so that, over time, progress and impact can be demonstrated. 0 Projects must have local focus: do it in your own backyard, your own neighborhood. What’s next? You're it, fellow members. You're the catalysts at your branch. You're the ones who can make it work. You're the ones who can organize a planning team ... bring youth and adult leaders together... plan and select an activity to do together. Need a little help? Good news! By early March your branch officers should receive your Join Hands Day Action Guides and video. The guides are to be shared with branch officers, members, youth leaders and leaders of other groups. If your branch didn't get one and you would like your own copy, that's easy. Just dial the Join Hands Day Action Line 1-877-OUR- 1DAY. Here's a faster way—download it from the web at www.ioinhandsdav.org. Check the web site for other ideas and information, too. Still need help? Want to connect to a Volunteer Center?
