Branch 51 Passaic, NJ C Branch 34 Pittsburgh, PA By Andy McNelis The leaves are changing on the trees, the morning air is a little colder and the kids are back in school. This means only one thing: the end of summer is here. As we turn our thoughts to the fast (too fast) approaching holiday season, remember By Martha Barillo This summer we had the privilege of participating in a small way in the Hungarian Scouting International Jubilee 2000 and the 1,000th anniversary of the crowning of St. Stephen, the first Catholic king of Hungary. It started with a beautiful altar cloth embroidered with the Hungarian crest and flag made by my cousin in the Ukraine. (She lives in the same area damaged by flooding last year and for which we raised relief funds.) The altar cloth was ready, but there seemed to be no way of getting it to the U.S. in time for the Feast of St. Stephen on Aug. 20. Around this time, a friend heard about the scouting jamboree to be held in Fillmore, N.Y., and that scouts from the Ukraine would be attending. I got in touch with our local scout leader who gave me the number of the Ukrainian scout master. I spoke to his wife who just happened to know a relative of mine who was working there. My relative delivered the cloth to the Ukrainian scout master who brought it to the U.S. It arrived in time for St. Stephen's feast. Miracles do happen. The scouts came from near and far, including South America, Australia and Europe. More than 800 scouts attended the jamboree. For 10 days they camped in Fillmore, trying to copy the way life was back in St. Stephen's time a thousand years ago. The Hungarian Reformed Church and St. Stephen's R.C. Church of Passaic hosted about 110 scouts for the jamboree. Many people worked very hard to make these children's stay here memorable. We had the honor of having the Ukrainian scouts at our house for dinner. They were an absolute joy: a perfect credit to their heritage, their families and Hungarian scouting. ( Branch 129 Columbus, OH By Árpád Sibrik The October branch meeting will be held Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the social hall of the Hungarian Reformed Church, 365 Woodrow Ave., Columbus. The VFW hall on Lockboume Road is no longer available. Please make note of this change. On Sept. 2, the branch held its family picnic at the Swan Club. About 55 members and guests attended. All had a good time. The branch furnished brats, hot dogs, fried chicken, beer, pop and coffee. Each family brought a covered dish or pastry. There was plenty of food for all.
