SPAITS PHILADELPHIA-The members of Branch 8286 Philadelphia were saddened by the recent death of the branch's spiritual director, the Rev. George S. Spaits. Father Spaits, 83, passed away March 29,2000. He was born Feb. 3,1917, in Clementon, Pa. He attend­ed Our Lady of Hungary School in Northampton, Pa., and the Pontifical College Josephinum in Warrington, Ohio. He was ordained a priest in 1943, appointed pastor of St. Stephen of Hungary Church in McAdoo, Pa., in 1957, and named pastor of Sacred Heart Hungarian Church in Philadelphia in 1960. In 1977, he was appointed vicar for the Hungarian Apostolate and chaplain to the nuns at St. Vincent Orphanage in Philadelphia. After retiring in 1992, Father Spaits settled into the retirement community of priests at the Regina Coeli home in Warminster, Pa., until ill health forced him to move to St. Joseph's Villa in Darby, Pa. During his priesthood, Father Spaits was a great friend and supporter of the Hungarian community. He celebrated Mass in Hungarian each Sunday and was actively involved in the affairs of Branch 8286. He helped many Hungarians gain entry into the U.S. after the Hungarian revolution in 1956. He also hosted Cardinal József Mind­­zenty when the cardinal toured the U.S. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated April 1 at Our Lady of Hungary Church with Bishop De Simone as celebrant. Msgr. Bizek offered the homily and Father Schwartz and Father Michel served as concelebrants. Interment was at Our Lady of Hungary cemetery in Northampton. May he rest in peace. MARY O. CHERPAK DUQUESNE, PA - The members of Branch 71 were saddened by the death of fellow member Mary Olga Cherpak. Ms. Cherpak passed away Feb. 28, 2000, at the Veterans Adminstration Hospital in Oakland. She was a retired chief petty officer from the U.S. Navy with service during World War II and the Vietnam War. She was a member of numerous veterans organizations and was founder and post commander of the Catholic War Veterans' Duquesne- West Mifflin Post 1855. In 1980, she received the Order of St. Sebastian, the highest award given by the veterans group. She was an avid bowler who participated in many of the Association's annual bowling tournaments. She is survived by two daughters, Sandy Schaming of Jefferson Hills, Pa., and Bonnie Burton of Greenock, Pa.; six grandchildren; a great­grandchild; and a brother, George Duli of Escondido, Calif. A funeral Mass was celebrated March 3 at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church. Interment was at Penn- Lincoln Memorial Park in North Huntingdon, Pa. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Arthritis Founda­tion. May she rest in peace. MARGARET M. KOROSY UPPER SANDUSKY, OHIO - The members of Branch 189 Alliance, Ohio, were saddened by the death of Margaret Mary Duruttya Korosy, who passed away March 21,2000, at the age of 87. One of her greatest joys was cooking and baking for the many dinners held at the Verhovay Hall in Alliance during the 1950's. She also enjoyed working in the Korosy Family Market and on the Korosy farms while raising her children. She was preceded in death by her husband Steve Korosy, a son Stephen, a brother Edward Duruttya and her parents Michael and Rosie (Marto) Duruttya. Surviving are three daughters, Rosine Trieff, Sarah Jackman and Marge Biddle; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Katona of San Bernardino, Calif.; and two brothers, Mike Duruttya of Alliance and John Duruttya of Pennsylvania. Mary she rest in peace. HELEN STIPKOVITS McKeesport, pa - The members of Branch 226 McKeesport were saddened by the recent death of fellow member Helen Stipkovits, 80, who passed away March 14, 2000. Many members may remember her as a singer and piano player at numerous WPA functions. She also used her musical talents as a former organist at St. Stephen Church in McKeesport and as a member of the planning committee for concerts at Renziehausen Park. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Stephen Church. Entombment was in the mausoleum at New St. Joseph Cemetery in North Versailles, Pa. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Carol Stipkovits Scholarship Fund, c/o the McKeesport Tiger Band, or a favorite charity. May she rest in peace.
