Tihany and the Balaton BALATON IS THE LARGEST LAKE in Hungary and is noted for its special qualities: its placid water with a high temperature in summer owing to the lake's shallowness; the fine sand on its southern shore; and the beautiful landscape on the northern shore. All of this makes Balaton excellent for bathing and the neighboring district ideal for holidays. The Tihany Peninsula, which almost cuts the Balaton in two, is very characteristic of this region. It has steep slopes heading toward the lake. On its summit is situated the double-steepled former Benedictine abbey founded by King Andrew I of Hungary in 1055. The abbey's deed of foundation is kept at Pannonhalma in the archives of the Benedictine order. This document is one of the most ancient and valuable relics of Hungarian history and linguistics. In the abbey's undamaged undercroft lies the remains of its founder-king. That is only fitting for Andrew was the "artist" who spent his entire life creating the abbey, his "work of art." Today, Tihany and the entire area has been declared a reserve and has become one of the most attractive resorts in the country with its hotels frequented mainly by foreign tourists. The area is also a sports center. One of the main events is the international motor rally and regatta held on the lake. Balatonfured is one of the oldest bathing and health resorts. Its success is due not only to its position on the shore but also to its mineral spring, well-known since the 17th century, long before sunbathing became popular. Balatonfured is a leading center for yachting, and boats ply the water sailing from its port in all directions. There are many rest houses and villas there, as well as the country's Region One more time, in English... The famous Indian author and poet Tagore was one of many notables cured here. His bust and a tree planted by him keep his memory alive in this place of healing. The spa also hosts important international medical conferences, in particular conferences on cardiotherapy. In addition to being a leading port and health center, Balaton boasts a rich cultural heritage. Balatonfured, along with nearby Csopak, was a preferred destination of Roman emperors in the fourth century. The annual "Anna Bal" has been held here for more than 150 years. The surrounding area features a number of vineyards producing wines of the finest quality that are rich in flavor and aroma. Lake Balaton is quite important to the Hungarian economy. Its impact is mainly felt through the constantly expanding tourist trade, but also through such activities as fishing and reed harvesting. So, when you visit Hungary, make sure you visit Balaton and enjoy this wonderful region. [M] 16 Willi» Pm till. May 2000
