Welcome a-Board Association’s new Board of Directors includes the addition of two new faces and the return of two familiar ones The William Penn Association Board of Directors: (front row, l-r) Barbara A. House, Louis A. Fodor (vice chairman), Anthony C. Beke (chairman), Elmer W. Toth (vice chairman), Michael R. Kara: (back row, l-r) Charles S. Johns, E. E. Vargo, Andrew W. McNelis, Stephen J. Varga, William J. Bern, Frank J. Wukovits Jr., and Michael F. Tomcsak. The WPA will be guided into the new millennium by a Board of Directors comprising eight returning members and four new ones. The new Board was elected during the first day of the 34th General Convention and sworn into office the next day. Of the four new national directors, two attended their first WPA Board meeting this October. The other two returned to familiar territory when they entered the boardroom. The most familiar face among the four new national directors is that of E. E. (Al) Vargo, the WPA's former national president. Mr. Vargo served as national president from February 1990 to September 1995, when he announced his retirement at the opening session of the 33rd General Convention. When he retired, Mr. Vargo, 71, ended a distinguished 38-year career in the fraternal benefit system. During his retirement he maintained a close connection to the Association, attending many of its fraternal events and keeping his promise to assist the WPA in any way possible. He first joined the WPA as national secretary in March 1986 after having served as vice presidentsecretary of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. He is a past director of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) and past president of the NFCA Secretaries Section. He also served the NFCA as past chairman of the Membership and Fraternal Life committees and State Fraternal Congress Section. Mr. Vargo is past president of both the Pennsylvania and New Jersey state fraternal congresses and a former director of both the New York and Maryland/District of Columbia fraternal congresses. He has earned many honors for his service to the fraternal benefit system and the American Hungarian community. Among them were the American Hungarian Foundation's Distinguished Service Award and the Fraternalist of the Year Award presented by the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh. He and his wife Betty moved to Maryland after his retirement where they were able to spend more time with their three daughters and grandchildren. He is a member of Branch 8330 Dundalk, Md. The other familiar face among the four new Board members is that of former National Director William J. Bero. Mr. Bero, 44, a member of Branch 1 Bridgeport, Conn., had previously served on the WPA Board from 1987 to 1991. Like Mr. Vargo, he has maintained close ties to the Association at both the national and branch levels. He has served his branch in various capacities, including vice president, treasurer and auditor. He has worked as a self-employed contractor for 20 years. He and his wife Joanne live in Fairfield, Conn., and are the parents of six children. Charles S. Johns is one of the two new national directors who attended their first Board meeting this October. 6 William I'miii life. Special Convention Issue, November 1999
