■ti Spotlighf^^^ (Julie (fatty Br. 14 Cleveland, OH Julie Goncy, a 1999 graduate of the University of Akron dance program, is the general manager of a newlyformed eight-member dance troupe, illuminata dance company. The name was chosen to express the company's motto: "Focus on the light." Julie was persuaded to help lay the groundwork for the company last spring by her friend and ensemble co-founder Sashsa Thackaberry, a 20- year-old University of Akron senior. Julie, 23, decided to take a year off before entering a graduate program in arts administration. "I wanted to get experience in fund-raising and grant-writing," she said. Serving as general manager of a new dance company seemed like the ideal project. The company's projected budget Members of the illuminate dance company, cofounded by Branch 14 member Julie Goncy, rehearse for an upcoming performance. for its first year of operation is $142,000, a figure the co-founders discovered was absurdly unrealistic once they began fund-raising. "It's hard to fund-raise when you don't have credentials," Julie said. "But we have a vision." Julie and Sashsa put together a brochure spelling out that vision: "to create and perform spiritually evocative choreography with professional dancers for local, national and international audiences." Lucinda Lavelli, director of the university's dance and theater department, predicts illuminata dance company will make a contribution to the dance scene in Northeast Ohio. "Some exciting things will be happening. The community will be better for it," she said. The company is working on three new pieces, choreographed by artistic director Sashsa. They will be performed Feb. 18 and 19 at 8:00 p.m. at the Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio. For more information, call Julie at (330) 802-7433. by Dawn D.
