Beke of Crosswicks, N.J., was elected chairman of the WPA Board of Directors during the Board's June meeting. He will fulfill the unexpired term of Michael J. Hrabar, who will assume Mr. Beke's seat on the Board. Mr. Beke, 58, became a member of the Board in October 1990 and was reelected by the General Convention in 1991 and 1995. Petes, a biology professor at the University of North Carolina (UNC), was welcomed this spring into the prestigious ranks of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Petes is the son of Joseph Petes, a member of WPA and its predecessor, the Rákóczi Aid Association, for 65 years. Dr. Petes, 52, was one of 60 new members and 15 foreign associates from 10 countries elected for distinguished and continuing achievements in research. He primarily studies the mechanisms of altering the genetic structure of yeast. His research team also is studying the genetic regulation of the stability of than 40 years. He has served as branch treasurer for the past 27 years and was an elected delegate to four General Conventions. He and his wife Marguerite are the parents of three adult sons, Steven, Brian and Karl. All are members of WPA Branch 13. simple, repetitive DNA sequences. Dr. Petes earned his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his doctorate in genetics from the University of Washington in Seattle. He joined the UNC faculty in 1988. The academy is a private, nonprofit society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research. "In terms of being honored, it's next to the Nobel Prize," said Thomas Meyer, UNC's vice provost for graduate studies and research. The academy's membership consists of 1,900 members and 300 foreign associates, of whom more than 160 have won Nobel Prizes.
