Ward Branch 14 Reporter Northern Ohioans have come to expect the Cleveland Indians base­ball team to provide them with ex­citing postseason play. I’m happy to report that is the case again this fall! I'm sure I share my enthusi­asm with all my fellow Branch 14 members who also have Tribe Fe­ver. In the next issue of the Will­iam Penn Life, I hope to be report­ing the Indians’ progress in the World Series! Besides enjoying a beautiful “In­dian Summer,” Branch 14 members are also busy preparing for the an­nual children’s Christmas party to be held Sunday, Dec. 13, at the Ridge Manor Party Center in Brooklyn, Ohio. All Branch 14 ju­venile members will receive invi­tations, but any Branch 14 member is welcome to attend. The next branch meeting will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Grand Bay Clubhouse, 7001 W. Cross Creek Trail, Brecksville. All Branch 14 mem­bers are welcome to attend. Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI By Barbara A. House National Director Our 50-year member banquet was held Sept. 19. We have never had a nicer one. Our thanks to National President George S. Charles Jr., his wife Dianne and son Steve for at­tending. Thanks also to National Director Anthony Beke and wife Marguerite who came from New Jersey. Father Barnabas from Holy Cross Hungarian Catholic Church was also our special guest. Thank you all for helping to make this day so special for our honorees. Those honored were Julia Alex, Anna Sabo, William Kovach, Anne Vitalis, Lillian Bunton, Robert Bunton, Elizabeth Arzarian, Eliza­beth Daley, William Daley, Julius Sabo and Irma Nyiri. It was a very special day. I have never been prouder to be a mem­ber of Branch 18. Thank you all. Happy 51st anniversary to Augie and Marge Acosta. Happy birthday to President Charles, National Vice President- Secretary Rick Toth, Carol Truesdell (my friend), Eleanor Kender (super baker), Ernie Ecsedi and former National Vice Presi­dent-Treasurer Fran Furedy. May you all have many more healthy and happy years. Please mark your calendars for the following changes. Due to scheduling conflicts, our October and November meetings must be changed. The new dates are Oct. 16 and Nov. 20. Our December meet­ing will be held Dec. 11, followed by our children’s Christmas party on Dec. 12 at 1:00 p.m. Please try to attend. Upcoming events include the Hungarian American Cultural Center’s 1956 commemoration on Oct. 25. and its Budapest Ball on Nov. 14. Holy Cross Hungarian Catholic Church will host a disznótoros (pork dinner) on Nov. 15. Please call me for additional information. Help keep your com­munity and your heritage alive by attending these events. It really does begin and end with you. Please remember in your prayers the families of our deceased mem­bers, especially our most recently deceased members: Helene Kozminski, Frances Lakatos, Jo­seph Major and Brandon May. May they rest in peace. Special get well wishes to Emma Toth. Hang in there, Emma; you have a lot going for you. Welcome home, Irene Korpák (my mom) from your wonderful trip to Hungary. Holy Cross Church is undergo­ing some renovations. Our “char­ity of the month” was Holy Cross. Our branch chooses a different charity each month. Please attend our meetings and suggest your fa­vorite charity. We will be happy to consider your charity suggestions. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy Novak Branch 28 Reporter September found the branch meet­ings resuming and the members planning the upcoming fall activi­ties. The first event to mark on your calendars is the Branch 28 bingo/ card party to be held Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2:00 p.m. at 2219 Donald Ave. There will also be a Chinese auc­tion. Admission is $2. We’re look­ing forward to seeing many of our members in attendance. Proceeds from this event will be donated to holiday charities and the WPA scholarship fund. Watch your local church bulle­tins for the final details on the an­nual Freedom Fighters memorial service commemorating the 1956 Hungarian revolution. The remem­brances will be held Sunday, Oct. 25, at the Franciscan Friary. What a wonderful honor was given recently to Leah Sabo. She was one of four Ohio gymnasts cho­sen to compete at a one-week in­ternational competition in Sweden. I’m sure she’ll do great. Congratulations and best wishes to all those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries this month. Get well wishes to all those not up to par these days, especially branch Vice President Frank Shauer. We hope all mem­bers and their families had a pleas­ant summer, with cookouts, swim­ming, fishing and golf. Charlie Boso is in the Pickaway Manor nursing home in Circleville, Ohio. He is holding his own. David George celebrated his 93rd birthday. He is in very good health and good spirits. Happy birthday, Dave. May you enjoy many more. The Rev. István Nyeste, pastor of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Columbus and a member of Branch 129, was very badly burned when his car caught fire. He is now home after a long stay in Univer­sity Hospital’s bum unit. May the Lord help him in his recovery. The branch is planning to have a one-day outing to Rising Sun, Ind., near Cincinnati, Ohio. The date, cost and other details have not been set. If you are interested in such a trip, please let us know. The branch family Christmas party will be held on Saturday, Dec. 12, at the VFW hall, the same site we have used for the past six years. More information will be released in November, but you should mark your calendars now for this event. Jolanda Murányi Barney wants to let all WPA members know that she had a lovely time at the Hun­garian Language Camp. She thanks all the staff. Another branch mem­ber, A1 Bartfay, also attended the camp. He also had nothing but good things to say about his experience. Our next branch meeting will be on Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW hall, 1591 Lockboume Road, Co­lumbus. Branch 296 Springdale, PA By Anna Marie Pochan Branch 296 Secretary-Treasurer Branch 296 had an enjoyable sum­mer with bacon roasts in June and August. Át our August bacon roast, we held a brief meeting and voted to change our meeting date to the sec­ond Wednesday of the month. This change will accommodate more members. Our next meeting will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m., at the Hungarian Reformed Church, 130 Walters Lane, Springdale. Our children’s Christmas party will be held Dec. 12. We will be making plans for the party at our next meeting. Ple^q márkim calendars and plan to attend. October birthday wishes go out to Boris Gosciejew, Jennie Wislie, Anna Marie Pochan, National President Pete Charles and all our members celebrating birthdays this month. Our condolences to the wife and family of lifelong member Joe Vargo who passed away in August. Joe was the Santa at our Christmas parties for as long as I can remem­ber. He also was the Santa at vari­ous functions around the Allegheny Valley for many years. He will be sadly missed by many. Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL By Joan Mauerman Branch 590 Reporter Our first meeting of the fall was held Sept. 12 in Egret Hall, Cape Coral. We had a wonderful turnout, considering some of our members were still up north, in Sweden and in Hungary. Vi Timmer Shinske looks great after recent knee surgery. Plans were finalized for our pic­nic to be held Oct. 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Jay-Cee Park in Cape Coral. We will have a bacon fry, stuffed cabbage, ham­burgers, salads and plenty of past­ries. Bring your appetite and enjoy good company. We are blessed to have the friendliest, most caring group of people in our branch.
