January 1998, William Penn Life, Page 5 Branch News The children of Branch 800 Altoona, Pa., were happy to share their Christmas wish lists with Santa during the branch 's Christmas party. Santa found time in his busy schedule to pay a visit to the young members of Branch 44 Akron, Ohio, during the branch ’s Christmas party. Continued from Page 4 members, who were totally captivated by his show. Of course, no Christmas party would be complete without a visit from Santa Claus, who appeared and presented each child with a bag of goodies. Our thanks to all who helped make this party a success, especially the Home Office for its gifts and financial allotment which makes it all possible. We would like to extend our sincerest get well wishes to Betty Mayerchak, who was recently hospitalized and is recuperating from a serious illness. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Betty and her husband Mike, who have dedicated much of their time and talents to WPA functions. Now that the holiday season is over, and the partying has ceased, it is time to get busy attending to the details of the upcoming Annual Bowling Tournament in Dayton this Memorial Day weekend. I assure you that once that task is completed, I will be treating myself to oodles of chocolate in Hershey, Pa., at the Annual Golf Tournament. Charles Branch 352 Auditor I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. And let’s hope that mother nature is kind to all of us these next few winter months. Our holiday party at Sports Haven Bowl was a huge success. It seemed as though all the adults and children enjoyed bowling with family and friends. We even had some characters from McDonald’s show up to entertain the children. And Santa arrived just in time to hand out all the gifts. Our thanks to everyone who helped to organize the party, especially Jim Deak for making all the arrangements necessary to have the party at the bowling lanes. Our holiday party for next year is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 29, 1998. We hope you will be able to join us for a fun-filled afternoon of fellowship. We held our branch meeting on Dec. 13 and elected our officers for 1998. All were unanimously reelected for another year. The officers are: George S. Charles Jr., president; James Deak, vice president; Barb Kapinus, secretary; and Bob Kapinus, treasurer. Our three auditors are Dianne Charles, Linda Deak and Helen Werling. Our branch coordinator is Elmer Furedy. Congratulations to you all. Besides the holiday party, our branch has been pretty busy this holiday season. At the party we collected 103 nonperishable items to include in our three holiday baskets. The recipients of the baskets were extremely grateful. Those $25 Giant Eagle gift certificates helped, too. Your generosity is wonderful. In fact, we had so many canned goods collected at our monthly meetings and at the party that we were able to donate two boxes of food to a local food pantry in addition to our holiday baskets. Thank you so very much. Our branch also sent monetary donations to Bethlehem Haven in Pittsburgh, the Humane Society on the North Side and the Pittsburgh Guild for the Blind in Bridgeville. And we are still collecting items to be donated in the near future to the Bethlehem Haven (a women’s shelter). If you have any ideas for future donations, please attend our branch meetings. We would like to hear any and all suggestions. That brings me to the dates for our 1998 branch meetings. Our January meeting is scheduled for Jan. 17 at 11:30 a.m. at the Old Country Buffet in Bridgeville. We hope you can join us. Meetings for Feb. 21, March 21, April 18 and May 16 are all scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the Old Country Buffet. Just pay when you come in and join us for some fraternal fellowship. We would like to see you there. I hope you have a wonderful new year, filled with the fraternal spirit, laughter and, most of all, love and good health. If you have any news you would like to share with us, please call Dianne Charles at 221-5136. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Branch 800 President The year 1998 has arrived. May the new year bring all members and their families good health and prosperity. And may all your expectations be fulfilled during the year. To all those experiencing poor health, may this year be good to you with the help of the good Lord. The branch is saddened by the death of longtime members Leroy E. Douglas, who died Dec. 11, 1997, at Altoona Hospital. Leroy was very faithful in attending all the meetings and social affairs of the branch. He was a past vice president of the branch and for many years chaired our summer picnics. He was buried from the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament and interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Altoona. May his soul rest in peace. Election of officers for 1998 was held at our December meeting. All those serving last year were reelected unanimously for another year. They are: Vincent Frank, president; Paul Masic, vice president; George Dorman, secretary; Robert Jones, treasurer; and Robert Aiken, Melvin Frank and Edwin Smith, auditors. Three families were helped at Christmastime in the annual Holiday Basket program. The families were very appreciative. This was made possible through the joint efforts of our branch and the Home Office. In our August 1997 issue, the article about the Rev. Frederick Becker’s 70th anniversary in the priesthood should have stated that “Father Fred” served as chaplain at the former Catholic Knights of St. George/Mount St. George Home in Wellsburg, W.Va., for 35 years. He Branch 800’s Christmas party was held as scheduled. And what a good time everyone had. Several families brought their friends for the first time and they expressed how much they enjoyed the evening. There was plenty of good food and loads of door prizes were given out. Christmas carol books furnished by the Home Office helped all enjoy the singing of carols. Everything was completed when Santa arrived for ti e kids. Many pictures were taken and Santa gave all the children a bag filled with holiday treats. Many thanks to the Home Office for all the nice items that were given to both adults and kids. And thanks to all members who helped in anyway to make it an enjoyable affair for everyone. Branch 8121 St. Marys, PA By Margaret Marconi Branch 8121 Secretary We had a regular business meeting and our annual Christmas party on Dec. 7 at St. Marys Parochial School annex. During the business portion of the meeting, we agreed to cancel all meetings for January, February and March. We also held the installation of officers. After finishing our business, we held our party for children and adults. The adults played bingo and cards while the children colored, played games and also played some bingo. Everyone enjoyed a good lunch, and all received door prizes and favors. The box filled with WPA items was a big hit. Kids had first pick of what they wanted, but the adults enjoyed it, too. The rulers and pens went quickly. Even the kids wanted the pill boxes. The Christmas tree and all the party’s activities made for a very festive occasion. Our thanks to the Home Office and all those who helped make this event possible and successful. continued to serve as chaplain at the renamed William Penn Home for several more years after the Catholic Knights of St. George merged with the William Penn Association in 1983. The Home was closed in 1992, not in 1988, as was stated in the article.------------------\ Articles & photographs for the February issue of the William Penn Life are due in our office by January 23, 1998 Correction
