May 1998, William Penn Life, Page 3 WPA prepares for 15th Annual Golf Tournament PITTSBURGH — With the WPA’s annual bowling tournament just days away, it’s easy to forget that our 15 th Annual Golf Tournament will also soon be upon us. The Home Office is now accepting entries for the golf tournament, which will be played Saturday, July 18, at the Dauphin Highlands Golf Course in Harrisburg, Pa. The official tournament entry/dinner reservation form appears on Page 3 of this issue. All entries and dinner reservations are due at the Home Office by June 30. Hotel accommodations will be at the Harrisburg East Holiday Inn, located only oneand-a-half miles from the golf course. Room rates will be $69 (plus tax) per night, double or king. All golfers and guests must make their own room reservations directly with the hotel. To do so, call the Holiday Inn at (717) 939-7841. You may want to make those reservations as soon as possible because, even though the WPA has reserved a large block of rooms, those rooms could be booked quickly. You see, this year’s golf tournament promises to attract not only many golfers, but also their families. Yes, this year’s tournament could be a great family getaway. In addition to being close to the golf course, the Holiday Inn is also only 10 miles from HersheyPark amusement park and the world-famous Hershey’s chocolate factory. Children (and many adults, no doubt) love taking the guided tour of the place where their favorite candies are made, then spending the rest of the day at one of the region’s best theme parks. Children might also enjoy playing on the five-hole pitch-and-putt course located on the grounds of the Holiday Inn. Adults will love the big cash prizes they could win during our 18-hole tournament. A special $15,000 prize will go to any eligible WPA member who scores a hole-inone on the designated Par 3 hole during tournament play. Plus, eligible members can win $5,000 for scoring a hole-in-one on any of the course’s other par 3 holes during tournament play. To be eligible for these hole-in-one prizes, a golfer must be at least 18 years of age and a life-benefit member of the William Penn Association as of July 1, 1998, with at least one year’s premium paid. All golfers can win special prizes to be awarded to the winners of various skill shot contests which will be held at holes along the course. This year’s longest drive contest will award prizes to both men and women in two age brackets: (1) golfers ages 18 to 59; and (2) golfers age 60 and older. Plus, prizes will be awarded to the men’s and women’s low gross and low net champions. The tournament weekend will officially begin on Friday, July 17, with the annual golfers reception at the Holiday Inn. The weekend’s official activities will conclude the next evening with the annual golf awards dinner, also at the Holiday Inn. The awards dinner will include a door prize giveaway and the ever-popular and exciting auction raffle for a new set of golf clubs and bag. For those golfers who wish to get in a practice round, the WPA has booked tee times at the Dauphin Highlands Golf Course on Friday, July 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Please note the course requires all golfers to wear soft spikes. Entry fees for Saturday’s tournament are $38 for WPA members and $46 for nonmembers. The fee includes greens fee, cart, a golf glove, a sleeve of balls and refreshments at the turn. The entry fee does not include the cost of the Saturday’s golf awards dinner. Dinner tickets are $21 for adults age 16 and older, $14 for teens ages 13 to 15, and $3 for children ages 3 to 12. Individuals, branches, businesses and groups may sign on as hole sponsors for the tournament for a $100 donation to the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation. To be a hole sponsor, contact George S. Charles Jr., national president. Remember: get your hotel reservations in as soon as possible, and plan on you and your family having a fun-filled weekend this July.
