Branch 8 Johnstown, PA By Mary Groshans Branch 8 Vice President Brandi 8 held its annual children’s Christmas party on Sunday, Dec. 7. The weather was cold and snowy, creating a wonderful holiday atmosphere for the party. Christmas cheer abounded in the church hall which was festively decorated with a beautiful Christmas tree and delicious luncheon buffet. The children excitedly waited their turn to talk to Santa and receive their special presents. Later, Santa led everyone in singing Christmas carols. Immediately preceding the party, Branch 8 held its regular monthly meeting and election of officers for 1998. The officers elected were: Sándor Yuhas, president; Mary Groshans, vice president; Donna Yuhas, secretary-treasurer; and Viola Yuhas and Vera Petruska, auditors. The officers look forward to serving our members in the coming years. Please feel free to contact Sándor Yuhas at (814) 535-5593 for any life insurance needs. Best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year from everyone at Branch 8. Branch 10 Barton, OH Branch 40 Martins Ferry, OH Branch 349 Weirton, WV Branch 8164 Steubenville, OH Branch 8285 Mingo Junction, OH By Louis A. Fodor National Director Members of the above branches gathered for two special affairs during the recent holiday season. On Dec. 7, we held a luncheon for the residents of Hartman Manor in Martins Ferry, Ohio. This annual luncheon for the residents of the high-rise is a tradition started by former Martins Ferry Mayor John Laslo, a member of Branch 40. It is something we look forward to every year. The food was prepared in the homes of William Penn members, then taken to the Manor and served by our members. Those who helped out were Patty Bennett and daughter Abbey, her mom, Margaret Moore, Bill Albert and Mr. and Mrs. Nick Toth. Many of the residents came down to the day-room for the luncheon, but others had to be served in their apartments. Our group served about 50 people. The menu included sliced ham, scalloped potatoes, green bean salad, cake, pop, tea and coffee. (My wife and I were unable to attend this event as we were in Pittsburgh for the WPA Board of Directors meeting.) Each child received a monetary gift in an envelope (they were surprised at the amount on the bills) and a bag of goodies from the WPA. By the time Santa had listened to the last child, Mrs. Miller’s catering service had set up the buffet. Before enjoying the food, we recited the Lord’s Prayer in both English and Hungarian. After eating, we started the mu"Sic. First, we played many traditional Christmas carols; then we played some hallagotoes and csárdás. Many couples got up to dance the csárdás, while others just joined in singing the Christmas songs. The food was homemade and to everyone’s taste. It included ham, fried chicken, scalloped potatoes, buttered noodles, green beans, chicken wings, rolls and butter, coffee and tea. Cake was served for dessert. Later, we held a raffle, and many prizes were given out. Many commented that this was the best Christmas party ever held by the branches. Everyone had plenty to eat (some went back for seconds), and everyone had a good time. Our thanks go to Patty Bennett, Margaret Moore, Bill Albert, Mary Tocash, Nick and Teresa Toth and all others who helped make this party to everyone’s liking. We also wish to thank the Home Office for its generous contribution toward our party. Now, we are looking forward to our spring banquet in April. We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, and we wish you all a healthy and prosperous new year. One week later, on Dec. 14, members of our five branches gathered at the VF W home in Yorkville, Ohio, for our family Christmas party. We sent invitations to 45 children. A total of 94 people, a third of which were children, attended the party. After singing the second chorus of “Jingle Bells,” Santa Claus made his appearance, greeting everyone in the hall and ringing his bells. He made his way to the front of the Christmas tree, where he let the kids climb on his knees so they could whisper into his ear what they wanted for Christmas. Branch 13 Trenton, NJ By Elsie H. Radvany Branch 13 Secretary Branch 13 extends sincere congratulations to one of its members, Robert Campbell, who received a scholarship award this year from the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Campbell, who are both members of Branch 13. He will be attending Richard Stockton College. We wish him the best as he begins his academic pursuits. The annual family Christmas party was held Sunday, Dec. 14, at the American-Hungarian Democratic Club in Trenton. Branch President Frank J. Radvany opened the annual branch meeting and welcomed everyone. Following a short business meeting, the election of officers was held. Unanimously reelected for 1998 were: Mr. Radvany, president; Joseph Hamari, vice president; Elsie H. Radvany, secretary; Anthony C. Beke, treasurer; and Margaret Hamari, controller. Stephen Bamacz duly installed the officers. The party commenced with a delicious buffet, pastries and refreshments. The buffet included the traditional kolbász and stuffed cabbage, plus many other goodies. Everyone in attendance received a Christmas stocking filled with goodies for children, parents and grandparents. Everyone also received a goody bag containing calendars, coloring books, crayons, carol books, pencils, sponges, change purses and key chains. There were numerous door prizes distributed. The afternoon was enjoyed by all in the true fraternal spirit. President Radvany thanked Vice President Hamari and Controller Hamari for the beautiful hall and table decorations. He also extended Christmas greetings to all on behalf of the WPA National Officers, Board of Directors, Auditing Committee and branch officers. Branch 13 also thanks the Home Office for the generous contribution towards our Christmas party. For servicing your life insurance needs, contact Elsie H. Ward Branch 14 Reporter Heavy snow didn’t hinder the attendance or enthusiasm at the Branch 14 annual Christmas party held Saturday, Dec. 6. About 140 people, including 75 children, enjoyed a delicious breakfast and entertainment by Sparkles the Clown and Jefferson the Magician. Jefferson even brought a live bunny! The children were delighted with their gifts from Santa (who bore a striking resemblance to Branch 14 member John Babroski). Thanks to the generosity of those attending the party, about $200 will be donated to the WPA scholarship fund. The next Branch 14 meeting will be held Jan. 14 at the Grand Bay Clubhouse, 7001 West Cross Creek, Brecksville, Ohio, at 7:30 p.m. Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI By Barbara A.House National Director Happy New Year to all. I hope your holidays were wonderful. Mine sure were. Our family Christmas party was attended by 66 persons. Thank you, Home Office, for your generous donation. It was greatly appreciated. As you can see from the picture from our party, a great time was had by all. I also want to thank our own “Angel Network” for all their help and hard work. I won’t name them all, but you can see them in the picture. Thanks also to Tom House for taking all the pictures. They turned out super. Please remember in your prayers our deceased members: Elizabeth Deregi, Albert Toth, Anna Louise Hassel and Michael Wilco. You will be in our hearts and prayers. I was just informed that Joe Soter has passed away. I have some wonderful memories of Joe. Rest in peace, Joe; you will be missed. Happy birthday to some very special people: Bob Kantor, Ida Kanyo, John Toth, Betty Johnson (Special Mom) and, last but not least, Maggie who is 11 years old. May you all have many, many more.
