I Branch News Lente Lajos and his group (pictured above) recently performed in Plant City, Fla. In attendance were a number of members of Branch 590. Continued from Page 7 the VFW hall, 1591 Lockboume Road, Columbus. The Hungarian church and the Ohio Hungarian Sister State Foundation sponsored a celebration March 15 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Hungarian War of Independence. About 300 people filled the Ohio State House atrium for this event. The program began with the singing of the American and Hungarian national anthems. The Rev. István Nyeste and Msgr. Joseph Fete of St. Joseph Cathedral offered the opening prayer. Dr. Steven Béla Várdy spoke on Louis Kossuth and American democracy. The poem “Talpra Magyar” was recited in Hungarian by Sándor Végső and in English by Karl Barlay. August Pust, special assistant to the Ohio governor for Multicultural Affairs and International Relations, spoke on the role of the Ohio-Hungary connection in today’s democratic Europe. Greetings were extended by Gen. Richard Alexander, commander of the Ohio National Guard, and Gen. István Oravec, commander of civil defense of Hungary. Petöfi’s “1848” was recited in Hungarian by Gyöngyi Jeszenszky and in English by Karl Barlay. Musical selections included “Rákóczy megtérése” by Kacsóh Pongrácz sung by soprano Almást Bedrosian-Kovach, accompanied by pianist Janet Vegh. The Columbus Children’s Choir, “The Voice of the City,” performed several songs under the direction of Dr. Sandra Mathias. The event ended with the audience singing “Kossuth Lajos azt üzente,” a revolutionary song from 1848. It was a magnificent program. In other branch news, Dave George sold his house in Columbus and is moving to Grove City to be closer to his children and grandchildren. Also, the branch will be sending a women’s bowling team to Dayton for the WPA tournament. We all are looking forward to it, since we had a good time at previous tournaments. Our older members in nursing homes are holding their own. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. We wish to express our condolences to National President George S. Charles Jr. and his wife Dianne on the death of Dianne’s mother, Mary Jackson. For any life insurance needs, please call Arpad Sibrik, Branch 129 coordinator, at (614) 231-8024, or write to him at 645 S. Kellner Road, Columbus, OH 43209. Branch 189 Alliance, OH By John Myers Branch 189 Secretary Hello, fellow members, and greetings to all! Since this is my first report to be published, I would like to bring you all up to speed on what’s been happening. Elected as branch officers for the current year were: Marge Antodasonti, president; Karen Hoover, vice president; Tim Shellenberger, treasurer; John Myers, secretary; and Mike Myers, Bill Lyda and Joe Myers, auditors. Since the elections, Karen Hoover has retired from her position as vice president. Mike Myers vacated his position as auditor and moved into his new position as vice president. All of us at the William Penn Club wish to extend our thanks to Karen Hoover for all of her hard work and efforts during her 11 years in the managerial position at the Club, and for her input while serving on its board. In other news, we are planning a local golf scramble at Buck Run on June 6. We are now having steak fries prepared on a charcoal pit on the second Friday of the month. If you’re hungry, we encourage you to attend. Hours are from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. All the officers of the branch encourage all members to join us at the Club for fellowship and distinguished conversation. Let’s make 1998 a year to remember. Until next time.... Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL By Joan Mauerman Branch 590 Reporter At our March branch meeting, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Hungarian War of Independence. Kalman Nagy recited the “Nemzeti Dal” and Bill Beczes led our group in singing. The tables were decorated with Hungarian placemats, and there was a display of pictures of famous Hungarians and Hungarian landmarks. The main centerpiece featured wood carvings by Andy Horvath of Youngstown, Ohio. Dolls clothed in Hungarian costumes completed the decorations by Joan Mauerman. Get well wishes were extended to Vilma Molnár and Olga Wansa. Congratulations to Ethel and Bill Beczes on their 58th wedding anniversary and to Olga and A1 Wansa on their 56th wedding anniversary. It was great to see Helen Toth and Mary Werrlein; they are both recovering after recent surgeries. A prayer was said for Albert Wass, author of “Purple Ghosts of Damnation Row.” He was a poet, teacher and novelist. He passed away recently in Florida. May God bless his soul. At the dinner held March 15 in Pittsburgh, it was like old home week as some 40 people from Youngstown were there. Some of them we had not seen in more than 10 years. Kathy Novak, Mary Schauer and Maria Goda were instrumental in bringing the group to Pittsburgh. Among their group was 4-year-old Bence Tomas who speaks fluent English and Hungarian. He’s a real little gentleman. Happy birthday to Jodi, Joey, Rick and Jenny Dues, Brooke Dailey, Danny Mauerman, Matt Damon and John Veres. Our condolences to the Charles and Jackson families on the death of Mary E. Jackson, mother of Dianne Charles. Our prayers go out to them.
