Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy Novak Branch 28 Reporter Congratulations to all the winners in the annual golf tournament. We know everyone in attendance enjoyed the event. By the time you read this, the Branch 28 picnic will have come and gone, but I’ll save all the details for the next issue. Just ä reminder about the events being held in August at the Youngstown Hungarian Club, 2219 Donald Ave.: Hungarian Day (Magyar Nap), Sunday, Aug. 10, from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m., with music by Joe Jeromes, sponsored by the Hungarian Federation; and St. Stephen of Hungary Church’s annual picnic, Sunday, Aug. 24, from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a Mass at noon, and, later, music by the Zolka Brothers. On Sunday, Sept. 7, the traditional fall Hungarian pilgrimage will be held at the Franciscan Friary. There will be a noontime meal, outdoor Stations of the Cross and an outdoor Mass, weather permitting. For more details, please call (330) 799-1888. The Youngstown Hungarian Club will host its annual Heritage Day on Sunday, Sept. 14, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at 2219 Donald Ave. The day will feature Hungarian music, food, dance performances, a display of artifacts and the sale of Hungarian items. The following Sunday, Sept. 21, there will be a bus trip to Berkeley Springs, W.Va., to present a plaque to be housed in the Alba Regina Chapel. Last November, Mrs. Joseph Gyorik, leader of the Chapel’s activities, visited Youngstown and expressed an interest in obtaining an item pertaining to the Rev. Msgr. Charles Boehm, the first Hungarian Roman Catholic priest to serve in the United States. A plaque honoring Msgr. Boehm was found, and the family responsible for the plaque agreed to donate it to the Chapel. September 21 will be recognized as “Youngstown Day” at the Chapel. Those interested in making this trip should call Mary Schauer at (330) 549-2935. Best wishes to everyone celebrating anniversaries or birthdays this month, especially Branch President Steve Novak. Special thoughts and prayers go out to all those having lost a loved one recently. Insurance questions? Call Alan Szabó at (330) 797-5057 or Gabe Namethat (330) 792-8145. Branch 129 Columbus, OH By Arpad Sibrik Branch 129 Coordinator A beautiful cool morning greeted 90-plus golfers at the WPA 14th Annual Golf Tournament held at the Culbertson Hills Golf Resort in Edinboro, Pa. Branch 129 was represented by 11 golfers. A little rain in the afternoon didn’t dampen the spirits of the players. Congratulations to Dolores Slivka whose gross score of 98 was the lowest among the women ages 18-59, and to Bill Wood who had the lowest net score among the men ages 18 to 59 with a 72. Both are from Branch 129. They each received a $100 gift certificate from the golf course’s pro shop. Friday night’s reception was great with lots of good food, pastries and liquid refreshments. The putting contest was lots of fun for everyone who participated, but no one sunk three putts on three balls to win $50. However, many did win WPA water bottles, golf balls and coffee mugs filled with candy. After the beautiful banquet Saturday night, there were many door prizes handed out and the raffle drawing for the benefit of the scholarship fund. The big event was the auction raffle for a set of Ping golf clubs. Congratulations to the winner, Steve Pronai. All in all, everyone had a good time, old and young alike. Matthew Isabel, my (almost) 9-year-old grandson, played with the big boys and didn’t do too bad, considering his age. Thanks to the Home Office and staff for all their efforts to make sure everyone had an enjoyable time. Charlie Boso is home from the hospital after skin grafts on his foot. Get well, Charlie. Acy Blair and John Dobos are still in the rest home. We hope you will get better, too. The next branch meeting will be held Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall, 1591 Lockboume Road, Columbus. See you there! For your life insurance needs, please call Arpad Sibrik, Branch 129 coordinator, at (614) 231 -8024, or write, 645 S. Kellner Road, Columbus, OH 43209. Branch 352 Coraopolis, PA By Dianne A. John Canavan performed the ceremony. Hillary is a WPA member as are her grandparents, A1 and Olga Wansa of Port Richey, Fla. Father Canavan honored the couple with a solo on the meaning of love. It was very touching. The reception was held at the Hungarian Rhapsody, and owner Steve Szatmári and his staff did an outstanding job. The food was delicious.
