Member’s studies abroad offer education beyond the classroom February 1997, William Penn Life, Page ’ Continued from Page 1 observance of the Sabbath. Americans appear to be "so caught up in everything,” Sarah said. "Europeans really enjoy their life and lifestyle.” She was also impressed by the ease in taking a train from country to country and seeing such different cultures. When asked of her most memorable experiences this past fall, Sarah, tilting her head back and smiling, recalls five days in the south of Germany. Her fall hiking trip through the Black Forest region was beautiful and inspiring. Also memorable, but not as pleasurable as the scenic Black Forest, was Sarah’s trip to two former Nazi concentration camps, including Dachau. "Something I’ll never forget was to be walking on the same soil as those victims,” Sarah said. Touring the camps and seeing the horrific sights of the gas chambers, crematoriums and burial mounds were most certainly humbling experiences for her. Despite making friends, learning the German culture and seeing many exciting and different places, Sarah admitted to being homesick. The Davitts are a closeknit family and were anxious to have Sarah return safely to them for the holidays. Sarah cheerfully admitted that she always felt safe and confident whenever she traveled in Europe and would love to return. Since she already visited her mother’s ancestral homeland of Lithuania, she intends to someday visit her father’s ancestral homeland of Ireland. As for Sarah’s aspirations, "law school is a definite,” she said, and "something with the UN would be ideal.” This seems logical as Sarah participated in a project called Model United Nations while attending North Catholic. In this project, high school students act as mock United Nations ambassadors solving a crisis. Perhaps while volunteering at a German kindergarten, Sarah also got the idea of someday teaching English in Lithuania. Although working as a grocery store cashier during her holiday break may not seem thrilling after her time in Europe, Sarah knows that she experienced an opportunity of a lifetime, but that it is time to return to her studies at Allegheny College.
