Page 4, William Penn Life, September 1996 Branch News Hungarian musicians entertain guests at a picnic hosted by the Ohio Valley American Hungarian Cutlural Society on Aug. 18 in Tiltonsville, Ohio. Members of Branch 14 Cleveland gather in front of the Emerald Empress for the branch’s recent boat trip to Put-in-Bay and Kelley’s Island. Branch 10 Barton, OH Branch 40 Martins Ferry, OH Branch 349 Weirton, WV By Louis A. Fodor National Director Early in the month of August, postcards were mailed to members of the Ohio Valley Hungarian American Cultural Society reminding all that a picnic was to be held at the Warren Township Park in Tiltonsville, Ohio, on Aug. 18. The members of this club are also members of the above branches. The club furnished töltött káposzta, kolbász and sauerkraut, káposztás tészta, sonka, bread and refreshments. Members were asked to bring a covered dish or pastries. And did they ever. Two long tables were covered with food. About 175 people showed up. At 1:15 p.m., Pat Bennett, president of the Cultural Society, called everyone together for a short prayer. WPA National Director Louis A. Fodor offered the invocation in both English and Hungarian. Then the members partook of the large variety of food. Music began at 2:30 p.m. and was provided by Dan Laslo, Lou Fodor, Francis Duska and John Setto. Some of the crowd sang along with the old favorite halgatós, while others danced the csárdás, polka and waltzes. At 4:00 p.m., the fires were ready for the bacon roast. We needed two fires to accommodate all the people that wanted to fry their bacon. We wish to thank Joe Tocash for reserving our favorite spot in the park each year, and his wife Mary for getting everything together. Thanks also go to Dan and Margaret Laslo, Jim Kalman and his daughters and Bill and Helen Albert for their help. We also thank Mickey and Teresa Toth and everyone that brought food; Gabe and Irene Rozsa (our Santa and Mrs. Claus at Christmastime) who recently returned from a vacation in Hungary and had the pictures to prove it; and my wife Ethel who made a batch of csöröge and brought the watermelon, both of which were "hits.” We also had the pleasure of hosting some guests from Columbus, along with others from all over. To one and all: thank you and thanks for helping to make this one of our largest and most successful picnics ever. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 Reporter It’s hard to believe that summer is almost over. Mother Nature treated us to beautiful weather in northern Ohio the past few months. Many Branch 14 members enjoyed the outing at Geauga Lake Park in June and the cruise to the beautiful Lake Erie islands at the end of July. Branch 14 Vice President Ernie Raymond was recently elected president of the Eighth Armored Division Association. Congratulations, Ernie. Branch 14 meetings will resume after the summer recess on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Grand Bay Clubhouse, 7001 West Cross Creek Trail, Brecksville. All Branch 14 members are welcome to attend. Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI By Barbara A. House National Director Congratulations to all those that made this year’s golf tournament such a success. It takes a lot of hard work, but it sure was great to see all the participants. Congratulations to our own Helen Papp who won the grand prize in the raffle, and to Elmer Furedy for being the winner of the golf clubs in the auction raffle. We remind everyone to fill out their golf surveys and mail them in. We would like to know where you want to hold the tournament next year. Branch 18 is hosting a bacon fry on Sunday, Sept. 15. Happy 30th anniversary to my special husband on Sept. 24. Can you believe it? I love you, Tom. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy Novak Branch 28 Reporter It’s so hard to believe that the summer has gone by, but the Youngstown Hungarian community still has several upcoming events to look forward to. The first one to mark on your calendars is the Annual Hungarian Heritage Day to be held Sunday, Sept. 15, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Youngstown American Hungarian Club, 2219 Donald Ave. The event will feature dancing to the Steve Pal Band, displays of folk art, boutiques selling many Hungarian items, a display celebrating the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of the Hungarian nation, and, of course, a wide array of traditional Hungarian foods and pastries. Another event still in the planning stage is a dinner marking the 80th anniversary of the Youngstown American Hungarian Federation and the 40th anniversary of the Freedom Fighters Revolution of 1956. The event is being planned for the end of October, so watch next month’s branch report for more information. The annual Hungarian Day picnic was a most enjoyable day for the above average crowd in attendance. Adding to the day was a pleasant surprise visit from Lew, Helen Ann and Nancy Molnár of New Jersey. St. Stephen of Hungary Church closed the celebration of its 90th anniversary with a wonderful picnic. We were glad to welcome members from a sister William Penn branch in Pennsylvania. Parishioners receiving the 1996 outstanding service awards were Ed Gabrich, initial picnic organizer, and Ruth Fabian, co-establisher and instructor of the Youngstown Hungarian dance group. Another special celebration taking place this summer was the 50th wedding anniversaries of Joe and Irene DeBose and Joe’s sister Betty Iacobucci and her husband Dominic, all of Aliquippa, Pa. During the festivities, two 80th birthdays were celebrated for Ann DeBose and John Bodnar. Our warmest congratulations go to all these lovely people. Best wishes to everyone celebrating anniversaries and birthdays this month, especially Branch 28 President Steve Sándor and Vice. President Steve Novak. We also offer our thoughts and prayers to Steve Sándor, who recently returned home from the hospital, and all others feeling under the weather. Lots of luck to all students returning to classes this fall. For answers to your insurance related questions, call Alan Szabó at (330) 797-5057 or Gabe Nameth at (330) 792-8145. Branch 34 Pittsburgh, PA Representatives of the Association’s Official Family and many members of Branch 34 honored the memory of the late Joseph P. Arvay, Chairman of the Board, at a Mass celebrated July 28 at St. Ann Hungarian Roman Catholic Worship Site in Hazelwood, Pa. Following Mass, 150 people gathered in St. Ann’s social hall for a special luncheon. Among those attending the Mass and luncheon were National Vice President-Treasurer Frances A. Furedy, National Directors Michael R. Kara and Andrew W. McNelis, and former National Treasurer John L. Lovász. Mr. Arvay died Sept. 14,1995, in Pittsburgh, just four days prior to the opening of the Association’s 33rd General Convention. The Association and Branch 34 thank all those who attended this special event and helped us to honor the memory of one of our Association’s most loyal, dedicated and hard working leaders.
