Éveknek kellett azonban elmúlniuk ahhoz, hogy az országgyűlés részéről kiküldött bizottság megkezdje nehéz működését, mely abból állott, hogy a kiegyezés pontjait összeállitsa. Óvatosság és szilárdság kettős elvére, amit Deák erősen hitt és vallott, ekkor volt a legnagyobb szüksége az ország főembereinek. S Deák Ferenc ebből is kivette a részét. Ha eddig nemzetének osztatlan bizalma jutalmazta meg honpolgári kötelezettségének hű teljesitéséért, e bizalomhoz most az uralkodó I. Ferenc József föltétien bizalma is hozzájárult. A felelős magyar minisztérium alakításával Deák Ferencet bízta meg, de Deák

nem fogadta el. Andrássy Gyula grófot ajánlotta maga helyett. - S nem vett részt Deák, I. Ferenc József megkoronázásán sem. Nem kért részt az ünnepeltetésből. A Kiegyezés létrejött, a szomorú múltat örvendetesebb jelen és biztatóbb jövő váltotta fel. S ez a tudat elég volt a "bölcsnek”. Elvégezvén a nagy munkát, sohasem hivalkodott vele. Az országgyűlésen sem szólott már, hagyta, hogy a fiatalok küzdjenek, s arassanak babért, szerezzenek érdemeket. Még egyszer emelte fel szavát a hetven esztendős államférfi, hogy aztán végleg elhallgasson.

Pest utcáin gyakran látták az "öreg bölcset”, s aki csak találkozott vele, tisztelettel kalapot emelt, megfordult, s utána nézett. 1876 őszén kezdett nagyon elgyengülni. Egyetem-téri, igénytelenül berendezett lakásában töltötte mostmár a napjait, karosszékében ülve, mert az ágyban már nem tudott feküdni. Januárban állapota kezdett súlyosabbá válni. A lapok tudatták az országgal, hogy Deák Ferenc nagy beteg. S Magyarország aggódva várt minden újabb hirt állapotáról. Az egész nemzet betege volt Ö. Minél inkább közeledett a vég, annál inkább kitetszett, milyen drága volt Ó nemzetének. Vörösmarty gyermekei virrasztónak gyámapjuk betegágyánál, s rokonai a leggyöngédebb ápolásban részesítették.

Január 28-án Deák Ferenc halálhírét közölték a hazai lapok, mindegyik gyászkeretben. Az országházban egy hely pedig örökre üres maradt - az a hely, melyet oly soká Ő foglalt el.

Azóta hányszor fordul vajon honatyáink tekintete az üreshely felé ... ?! S "a haza bölcse” már nem ül ott, hogy úgy döntse el a vitát, hogy az Ítélet mindenkor a hazát szolgálná! Mert szelleme, hisszük, ott lebeg most is az országgyűlés termében, a azok az igazságok, melyeket senki sem tudott oly egyszerű és igénytelen szavakkal kifejezni, hatnak mindaddig, mig e nemzetben jogérzet, igazság és hazaszeretet lesz.

Sárospatak choir to tour N. America

CLEVELAND — The choir of the Sárospatak Reformed College in Hungary will present its North American Concert Tour from March 30 to April 20.

The choir, featuring 43 boys and girls from the school, will present a program which will include music by Goudimel, Kodály, Gárdonyi, Bárdos, Bach and many other composers.

The choir is scheduled to perform on the following dates at the following locations:

*March 30, Bridgeport, Conn., (tentative site: the Clinton Avenue Hungarian Reformed Church);

*March 31, New York City, the E. 82nd St. Church;

*April 1, Passaic, N.J., the Passaic Hungarian Reformed Church;

* April 3, Perth Amboy, N.J., the Free Hungarian Reformed Church;

*April 4, New Brunswick, N.J., Hungarian Reformed Church;

*April 7, Washington, D.C., the National Cathedral;

*April 9, Columbus, Ohio, (site to be determined);

* April 11, Toledo, Ohio, (site to be determined);

*April 13, Cleveland, Fairview Park High School Auditorium;

* April 14, Detroit, Hungarian Reformed Church;

*April 16, Holland, Mich., First Reformed Church;

During its tour, the choir will spend a night at Penn Scenic View as they travel from Washington to Columbus.

The Sárospatak Reformed College, Hungary’s first evangelical

school, was founded in 1531 during the early years of the Reformation. During the next 400 years, it earned a reputation as one of the finest schools in Europe.

In 1951, the Communist government took control of the school and stripped it of its religious affiliation.

But, in 1990, a movement began to reestablish the school as a Reformed academy. With the help of the William Penn Association and other contributors, both in Hungary and abroad, the school reopened its doors under Church leadership.
