November 1995, William Penn Life, Page 7 Tours to coincide with 1,100th anniversary If you ever have thought of traveling to Hungary, whether for a first-time visit or a return trip, then 1996 will be the year to turn those thoughts into action. For next year, the country will celebrate the 1,100th anniversary, or millecentenarium, of the Hungarian Conquest and settlement of Central Europe, and the William Penn will again sponsor tours so its members and friends can participate in this exciting moment in history. Dates for the tours will be announced soon. The millecentenarium will serve as the starting point for a five-year-long series of festivities culminating in the year 2000, the 1,000th anniversary of HungarMembers of this September’s William Penn Association tour group pose in front of a statue of composer Johann Strauss in Vienna’s City Park. Branch News Continued from Page 8 month at the Hungarian Liberty Club in Plant City. Our condolences to Ruth Kiss of Apopka on the recent deaths of her mother and daughter-inlaw. For all your life insurance needs, call Mike Tomcsak at (941) 858-8071 and ask him how you can protect your loved ones. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Branch 800 President The branch’s annual memorial Mass for all deceased members will be celebrated on Thanksgiving Day at 9:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Altoona. We hope as many members as possible come and take part in remembering all of our deceased loved ones. We couldn’t show them any greater love and honor than by taking part in the sacrifice of the Mass. The branch’s annual Christmas party will be held Sunday, Dec. 10, at 6:00 p.m. in the social hall of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Reservations are being accepted from now until Dec. 6. Call Vincent Frank at 695-0213 to make your reservation. All members, their families and friends are welcome. We especially encourage juvenile members and their friends to attend. A reminder: nomination and election of branch officers for 1996 will take place during our branch meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at 7:00 p.m. Our sympathy and prayers go out to John Conti and family on the death of his wife, Mary, following an extended illness. They were married for 41 years. Mary was a member of the Ladies Catholic Benevolent Association. The funeral Mass was held at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. May her soul rest in peace. On Thanksgiving, our nation will give thanks for all the good things that have happened to us ever since the first Thanksgiving Day in 1621 in what was then called the "New World.” Contrary to many of our intellectuals who like to remind us of our faults and shortcomings, this is still the best country in the world in which to live. We enjoy freedoms and advantages unavailable in many other countries centuries older. Most of them have not come half as far as we have, and they have had four times as much time to do it. Your branch officers wish you and your family a happy Thanksgiving holiday. May it be a blessed occasion filled with love for your family. ian statehood and St. Stephen’s coronation as King of Hungary. During this period the country will be looking back on the way in which it became integrated into Europe and on the intellectual and material advances it made in company with the peoples around it. Many of the key programs for the millecentenarium will be held in Budapest, but important events also will be held at the country’s major historical sites. Many smaller towns and communities will also be holding events. One site planning special activities will be Pannonhalma which will also be celebrating the 1,000th anniversary of the Benedictine Abbey, Hungary’s first monastic school established in 996. For more details on the millecentenarium, contact the Hungarian Tourist Board, 150 E. 58th St., New York, NY 10155, phone (212) 355-0240. Also, watch for more information on William Penn’s 1996 tours to Hungary in upcoming issues of the William Penn Life.
