We at Branch 18 are sending three teams. Welcome, ladies! I want to send a heartfelt thank you to all the William Penn members who worked so hard to make the Holy Cross Hungarian Roman Catholic Church Festival such a huge success. Everything from the food to the ad books received many wonderful compliments. Thanks, again, to all who shared in all the hard work. The Hungarian American Cultural Center is at this moment preparing for its annual picnic on June 24 and 25.1 hope we all help support these Hungarian activities. Mark your calendars for these upcoming events: Magyar Nap picnic, Aug. 13; the annual pig roast, Sept. 9 and 10. Please call me if you want further information. Looking ahead, mark you calendars for Sunday, Aug. 13, for the traditional Magyar Nap (Hungarian Day) festival sponsored by the Youngstown American-Hungarian Federation. This year’s activities include a Hungarian orchestra, Hungarian food and pastries, and a local dance group. All this will be taking place at 2219 Donald Ave. from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. On the recuperating list is Sándor Tollas Sr. who recently underwent surgery (not as extensive as planned, but still serious) and Irene Devlin who also was in the hospital recently. We extend heartfelt sympathy to all those having lost a family member recently. Our best wishes go to all those celebrating birthdays or anniversaries this month. Branch 129 Columbus, OH By Arpad Sibrik Branch 129 Coordinator Congratulations to all the bowlers, especially the ladies’ team from Branch 129, who competed in the recent tournament. Everyone, including the cheering section, had a good time. The June branch meeting was cancelled because too many members and officers were away on vacation. Our next branch meeting will be held on Aug. 9. Our golfers are getting ready for the July 22 golf tournament. Our branch will have at least one foursome playing in the tournament. Helen Blair, our faithful member, experienced some healthrelated difficulties recently. We wish her a speedy recovery. About half of the Mort 50 Attention Detroit>area bowlers ♦ ♦ ♦ The Branch 18 (Lincoln Park) Bowling League will return in full operation in the fall. This will be a mixed, Hungarian-American league with male and female bowlers meeting every other Sunday. Bowling will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich. For more information on the William Penn Bowling League, please call National Director Barbara A. Branch 590 Cape Coral, FL By Joan Mauerman Branch 590 Reporter An officers meeting was held in June to finalize plans for the remainder of the year. Cards will be sent out to members as a reminder of our twohour train ride starting in Ft. Myers on Sept. 24. We will meet at the train station in the Ft. Myers Mall on Colonial Avenue at noon. We will have an old-fashioned bacon fry on Oct. 22 at the home of Sara and John Lesko in Cape Coral. Congratulations to National Director Michael Tomcsak on his recent election as president of the Florida Fraternal Congress. The congress’ convention and election took place at Cocoa Beach May 18. We know he will do a great job. Steve Bartus, husband of Betty Bartus, is a patient at a nursing facility. Get well cards may be mailed to Steve Bartus, 5352 Mayfair Ct., Cape Coral, FL 33904. We are happy to hear that Elizabeth Posey is much better. W e offer prayers for the family of Julianne Kovács who passed away on May 26. Wedding congratulations go out to Nicole Renee Becze of West Mifflin, Pa., and John David Thomas of Duquesne, Pa. They were married May 27 at the First Presbyterian Church in Duquesne. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Branch 800 President Branch 800’s summer corn boil and wiener roast will be held on Wednesday, Aug 9, at 6:00 p.m. at Highland Park in Altoona, rain or shine. For the first time, this event will be catered but will still feature the same food as always. Reservations are a must for this affair. Make your reservations by calling Vincent Frank at 695- 0213. Deadline is Aug. 2. All members and their families and friends are most welcome. Our branch elected one delegate and one alternate delegate to represent us at the William Penn’s 33rd General Convention to be held this September in Pittsburgh. We received word from the superintendent of Bishop Guilfoyle High School in Altoona that Michael Jude Bennett has won the branch’s annual bond award for earning the highest grades in religion class. In the fall Michael will be attending Saint Francis College in Loretto, Pa. He was awarded a four-year academic scholarship and will major in physical therapy. Michael is a member of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Altoona. At Bishop Guilfoyle High, he played basketball and was in the top 10 of his graduating class in academics. Congratulations, Michael. It is hoped that you all are having a nice summer. We also hope you can work it into your schedule to be with us at our summer affair on Aug. 9. We sure would like to see you there.
