Please plan to attend our next branch meeting on Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Eva Laczina Branch 15 Secretary On Oct. 8, Branch 15 held its annual Szüreti Bal (Grape Harvest Ball), a traditional Hungarian event whose roots date back hundreds of years. This year’s ball just may have been our most successful one yet. As usual our ball began with the doors of the church hall opening at 7:00 p.m., allowing our guests to slowly fill the large room where the event was held.We were very pleased with this year’s turnout of approximately 220 people. As everyone settled in, dinner was served. A traditional Disznótoros dinner, consisting of hurka and sausage, filled everyone’s tummy. All enjoyed a meal that was exceptionally well-prepared by our hard-working men and women who devoted their time and energies to make this event a success. Of course, no Szüreti Bal is complete without music to slide under everyone’s toes. This year it was supplied by a one-man band known across the country as András Farkas. With a keyboard to run his fingers across, a rhythm machine for toe-tapping and a cheery voice for singing everyone’s favorites, he put on an amazing, non-stop performance. We all wore out our shoes. Later in the evening, we held raffle drawings for various donated items, including fresh sausage, drinks such as palinka, Hungarian wines, pastries, embroidered items and the grand prize—a Korona consisting of a bottle of Hungarian wine surrounded by crunchy apples, pears and grapes. This year, however, we had two grand prizes. The other was a beautiful basket of goodies containing wine, palinka, pastries and a bouquet of flowers. It was quite a lovely sight. Everyone was cheering for the winners. We thank all those who supplied our raffle drawing with their gifts and donations. Our ball was quite an event, and we hope that all those who attended went home with pleasant memories of this celebrated occasion. Our branch sends its heartfelt thanks to all the hard-working ladies and gentlemen who devoted their time to help make this event such a fine evening. Special thanks also go to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wukovits Jr. of South Bend, Ind., for honoring and supporting our branch with their presence. We hope to see all of you at next year’s ball. Branch 16 Perth Amboy, NJ We congratulate Branch 16 member Meagan Mirkovich who was recently awarded the Rensselaer Medal by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
