April 1994, William Penn Life, Page 3 Bowling tournament entries due April 22 Pilgrimage to Kossuth, Pa., planned The American Hungarian Churches and Societies of Western Pennsylvania will sponsor a pilgrimage to Kossuth, Pa., on Saturday, June 11, 1994. A small town located in northwestern Pennsylvania, Kossuth is named after the great Hungarian leader, Lajos (Louis) Kossuth. Following the collapse of the Hungarian struggle for freedom of 1848-49, Kossuth sought refuge abroad. In 1852 he made a historic tour of the United States during which he was warmly welcomed as a fighter for freedom and liberty. Many of the places he visited here honored Kossuth by naming street, cities and counties after him. One of those places was the city in Pennsylvania which adopted his name. Kossuth, Pa., is located on U.S. Route 322, just north of Interstate 80. It lies about 15 miles northwest of the city of Clarion and a few miles southeast of Oil City. More details and reservations information will appear in the May issue of the William Penn Life. The next annual meeting of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc., will be held during our 51st Annual Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days in New Brunswick, N.J., May 27 to 29,1994. This year's meeting will be held at the Somerset Marriott on Friday, May 27,1994, at 5:30 p.m. A cordial invitation is extended to you and all members of your branch to attend our Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days and to enjoy this fraternal activity. We also kindly ask for your continued support of our scholarship fund. As is stated in the By-Laws of the Association, any branch or individual donating a minimum of $100.00 is eligible to vote at the Annual Meeting. It is our hope that all our branches and members will continue to support the Scholarship Foundation that has been established by our Association for the purpose of providing our young members assistance in attaining a higher education. As a parent, I know that many of you share a concern that our children receive the best possible education so as to take their place in society. All of us realize how important it is that our young people possess marketable skills which only a good education can provide. Please make your donations payable to “William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation, Inc.” and send them to my attention so that I may report them at our Annual Meeting. All contributions, no matter what the amount, will be greatly appreciated. Over the years, we have given financial assistance to many of our young members who have gone on to excel in a variety of professions. We are proud to report that our Scholarship Foundation has an outstanding record of providing strong financial support in the form of scholarship grants. Since the inception of our scholarship program in 1973, a total of 1,907 grants worth $599,750 have been awarded to young members pursuing a higher education. Their successes—both as productive professionals and as adults of strong character—convinces us that our support of the Scholarship Foundation is just as important as the support we offer to our fraternal, cultural and heritage programs. By helping today’s young people, we are helping to better our society and our world. So, again, we ask our members and branches to join us in supporting our Scholarship Foundation. It benefits all of us. CAN WE COUNT ON YOU? George S.
