September 1993, William Penn Life, Page 5 Branch News Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI By Barbara Ann House National Director The summer is certainly flying by, and I, for one, am ready for it to be gone. This has really been a hot one. Hope everyone had a lovely summer vacation and managed to stay healthy. Congratulations to all those who worked so hard to make the Columbus golf tournament such a success. All your hard work paid off; it was super. The weather was great, the banquet was great. There were many door prizes, and everyone had a great time. Those who did not attend really missed out. Special congratulations to Olga Burinda who came closest to the line. She always golfs well in these tournaments. Congratulations to Ruth and Charlie Furedy on their 50th wedding anniversary. It was sure nice to see Ruth looking so well. However, we were sorry to hear of the death of Ruth’s brother. Our prayers are with you. Happy 50th also to Betty and Charles Kato. You both are special people. Michele and Mark Grobbel are the very proud parents of a wonderful baby boy, Jacob Alexander. Michele was the secretary here in Michigan at the William Penn insurance office. Congratulations. I know how long you waited for him. Please remember that our monthly membership meetings will resume Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m. Please feel free to call me if you have some news you would like to share. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy Novak Branch 28 Reporter Hard to believe that the summer of 1993 has now past and left us with many memories. Some reminders for upcoming events in the Youngstown area: • Sept. 12 - Branch 28 meeting. • Sept. 19 - The Youngstown American Hungarian Club will be sponsoring its annual Heritage Day Festival. Gates open at 1:00 p.m. at the club house, 2219 Donald Ave. Displays of Hungarian artifacts, performing dance groups, old fashioned cooking, and music by Steve Pal will be some of the day’s highlights. • Oct. 10 - Branch 28 will be sponsoring a fall/holiday bingo/ card party. Doors will open at 2:00 p.m. with a small admission charged. Bingo, raffles, card games, and refreshments will be available. Prizes will feature holiday themes. We look forward to seeing many branch members at these functions. Please note that Mt. Alverna Friary will not be having a fall pilgrimage as they are remodeling the church. The priests are already working on having one in the spring of 1994. Warmest wishes to everyone celebrating birthdays or anniversaries. Speedy recoveries to those who have been under the weather. Sincere sympathy to those suffering from the loss of any family members. Please contact me with any news you wish to share. Darago Branch 44 President Thirty-six members and friends of Branch 44 spent a lazy, hazy, crazy day of summer on our bus trip to Marietta, Ohio. It was a cultural trip: Fenton Museum and Glass Outlet, Cedar Egg Factory, Rossi pasta tour. It was entertaining: 19th century horse and buggy ride, trolley ride, old-time sternwheeler boat ride, 19th century melodrama. It was fulfilling: muffins and o.j. on the bus, lunch and dinner included. Everyone received "surprises”: pasta, a bag of cedar chips for their closets, a McDonald’s free breakfast sandwich coupon. Junior member Claire Camesalli liked "Sam,” the horse that pulled the buggy, the best. Our next branch meeting will be held Sunday, Sept. 12, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at 1643-13th St., S.W., Akron. Refreshments will be served. By popular demand, we will hold a Halloween Bingo on Sunday, Oct. 10, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at 1643-13th St., S.W., Akron. Cards will be two for $5. There will also be ghostly drinks and spooky eats. Net proceeds will benefit the William Penn scholarship fund. We will award prizes for the best witch’s and warlock’s hats. Members, friends and members of other branches are all welcome to attend. For directions call 753-5270. Congratulations to Branch 44 scholarship recipient Carmen Darago who graduated cum laude from Kent State University on Aug. 21. She’s working as a staff accountant for a C.P. A. and plans to take the certified accounting exam in November to become a C.P.A. herself. She plans to specialize in tax accounting. Carmen is the great-granddaughter of former Verhovay President Joseph Darago. Congratulations, also, to all current Branch 44 scholarship recipients. Don’t forget to send us your school news.
