Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Eva Laczina Branch 15 Secretary On behalf of the Chicago chapter of the American Association of Young Hungarians, I would like to express our sincere thanks to the William Penn Association for its contribution benefiting a high school in Kézdivásárhely, Erdély. The school is about 300 years old and is in desperate need of repair. The roof leaks, the walls are peeling, there are problems with the plumbing, and a number of other things need repair. Mr. Dezső Vencel, the headmaster of the school, contacted our chapter, as well as other acquaintances, to assist him. His school is one of a very few which still promotes and uses the Hungarian language in the school’s instruction. We commend Mr. Vencel for running such a fine institution. On March 21, our chapter held a benefit dinner for the school at St. Stephen’s King of Hungary Church. Many Branch 15 members came and supported our effort. Our goal for this dinner was to raise $ 1,500. But, with all of the people that helped support our cause—including the William Penn Association—we walked away with about $3,000. We were very pleased and proud of ourselves and of the people who helped to contribute. A very special thank you goes out to Frances Furedy for her special contribution. Once again, our chapter of the AAYH would like to thank the William Penn and all those who supported and contributed to our cause. Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI By Barbara A. House National Director Hope everyone is enjoying their summer. It sure beats last year’s. Enjoy it before the snow comes. Wasn’t it great to see so many super pictures from the bowling tournament in the last William Penn Life? That was the best tournament and banquet ever. Thanks, Lou Fodor, for again taking such great pictures. Happy anniversary wishes go to Betty and Paul Johnson and to Andy and Emma Toth. The Toths celebrated 53 years together on July 20. Emma, by the way, is a super golfer. She recently shot a 49 for nine holes. We welcome home from vacation Ida Kanyo and Andy and Julia Chesley. I know you had a great time, but I’m glad you’re home. Both Andy and Julia bowled great at the tournament. Special congrats to all the Branch 18 bowlers. We did super. Happy birthday, Margaret New. She is a special friend. Get well wishes go to Mary Baranyi. She is having a rough time. We sure hope you are feeling better, Mary. Our condolences go to the families of John Garstecki, Joseph Takacs, Elizabeth Balia, Louis Csordás, Goldie Gera, Gizella Jacso, Catherine Kelemen, Gizella Nagy, Elizabeth Pavlichek and Elizabeth Perschke. Thank you to all of you who remembered me with lovely cards and phone calls on my recent election to the William Penn Board of Directors. You made a special time in my life even more special. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy E. Novak Branch 28 Reporter The annual summer picnic turned out to be quite a success, with many members gathering for this special affair. We thank everyone for coming and helping out by bringing casseroles and desserts. Despite the heat of the day, we still held our traditional bacon fry. We were all very happy to have had National Vice President- Secretary George S. (Pete) Charles Jr. and his wife Dianne join us for the afternoon. The raffle winners included Margaret Barkó, who won the Herend plate donated by the Association, and Brian Panagual, who won the 50/50 raffle. We hope everyone who attended had a good time and that next year they will bring other members and friends with them to add to the fun. Special thoughts and get well wishes go out to Frank and Mary Torok, John Burkosky and Helen Bodnar. It’s so nice to see Ruth Fabian back out and about after her stay at the Cleveland Clinic. Special best wishes go to everyone celebrating a birthday or anniversary this month. Extra celebrations will be marking the 87th birthday of Mrs. Mary Cibulas on Aug. 7: she’ll be spending the day in Florida attending the wedding of her grandson, Michael Tomcsak. Congratulations, Michael and Paulene! Remember, Aug. 8 is Magyar Nap at the American Hungarian club house, 2219 Donald Ave., from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. Joe Jeromes will be providing the music. We’re also looking forward to the annual Hungarian Heritage Day which will be held Sept. 19 from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the club house. Our sincere sympathy goes to all who have lost a family member or a dear friend recently. Special thoughts and prayers go to those experiencing difficulties caused by the disastrous floods in the Midwest. Darago Branch 44 President Members stayed cool in the air conditioning but had a "hot time” at the Branch 44 July picnic. The thermometer outside said 94 degrees; the group inside said "more iced drinks and sausage sandwiches!” More than 20 people enjoyed the freedom to come and go during the afternoon-long picnic. A surprise visit from member Frank Papp, who is visiting his children and 34 grandchildren in the Akron area, kept the conversation lively. The big winners in the summer raffle were Rose Herdon, Frank Papp and Jeanne Weaver. It’s not too late to join the bus tour to Marietta, Ohio. There are a few seats remaining. The tour will be held Aug. 21 and costs $55 for adults and $50 for children 13 and under. Call 753- 5270 or 673-3347 for reservations. There will be lots of fun and surprises. Get well wishes go to members John Bradach and Ed Selepec, both in Akron General Medical Center. Our condolences go to the families of members who have passed away during the spring and summer. Our thoughts are with you all. We received a post card from "travelling” member Val Thrasher. She’s in Italy, travelling with a group from Loyola University. She was privileged to attend two audiences with the Pope. Insurance needs? Call Alan izabo at (216) 798-9515. Branch 59 Windber, PA Congratulations to Joseph and Elizabeth (Soltész) Toki who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 10. They were married on that date in 1933 in New York’s St. Stephen Catholic Church by the Rev. Bruno Szabó. Joseph, a retired coal miner, was born in Windber, son of the late Andrew and Anna Toki. Elizabeth, a native of Hungary, is the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Soltész. Both are longtime members of Branch 59. They are the parents of four children: Stephen G. Toki of Windber; Patricia Ann Albaugh of Edinburg, Va.; Elizabeth Libby of Falls Church, Va.; and John A. Toki of Derry, N.H. They also have seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Our best wishes to them for many more happy years together. Branch 71 Duquesne, PA Branch 89 Homestead, PA By Lisa S. Toth Branch 89 Reporter Members and friends of Branches 71 and 89 attended the dog races at Wheeling Downs Race Track in Wheeling, W.Va., on June 18. Once again, we were pleased with the wonderful turnout for this event. Among the 72 people attending were National President E. E. Vargo and his wife Betty, National Director Elmer W. Toth and his wife Ruth, retired National Secretary Gus G. Nagy and his wife Betty, and Vice Chairman of the Board Roger G. Nagy. Guests were transported to the races in two deluxe DeBolt Unlimited buses and enjoyed playing bingo and catching up on the latest events along the way. Once we arrived at the track, we were escorted to the enclosed air-conditioned dining area where we all enjoyed a delicious sitdown meal, complete with a panoramic view of the track from our tables. We want to thank our photographer, Bill Mayor, for capturing the event on film. We hope all the members of both branches are enjoying their summer. Branch 129 Columbus, OH By Arpad Sibrik Branch 129 Coordinator A picture perfect day greeted the 132 golfers at the challenging Turnberry Golf Club in Pickerington, Ohio, for the 10th Annual Golf Tournament.
