Branch 18 Lincoln Park, MI By Barbara A. House National Director Our condolences to the family of National Director William J. Kovach, who passed away in May. I knew Bill, and he truly was a gentle man. He will be missed. Welcome home to Andy and Emme Toth who were in Iowa for their granddaughter’s graduation. I’m glad they had a great time, but we really missed them at the bowling tournament. This is the first one they missed in a long time. Speaking of the tournament: a great big thank you to Mike Tomcsak and his team, they were marvelous. My team—consisting of Carol Truesdell, Julia Chesley, Mary Koszonyi, Teri Corba and me—came in second place. We had a terrific time. Congratulations to the first place team. The banquet at the tournament was the best ever. It had the best food, best music and best group of people we ever had. Those who didn’t attend really missed a marvelous evening. Thank you to the Home Office and the Ivancso family for a job well done. The golf tournament is almost here. I hope everyone has their paperwork in the mail. Don’t miss this wonderful time. I was again fortunate to attend the Hungarian Festival in New Brunswick, N.J. While there I visited the Hungarian Heritage Center. What a moving experience. It really makes you proud to be Hungarian. Please send your contribution to help this center keep up their good works. A heartfelt thank you goes to the National Officers and Board of Directors on my recent election to the Board. 1 will work to the best of my ability. I am honored, privileged and very lucky to work with people I love. Special greetings and best wishes go to Helen and George Lajtos, both Branch 18 members, who will celebrate their 70th (that’s right, 70th) wedding anniversary July 11. They plan to renew their wedding vows in a ceremony at Holy Cross Hungarian R. C. Church in Detroit. Afterwards they will join family and friends for dinner. May they enjoy more happy years together. Happy 91st birthday greetings go to former National President Julius Macker. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy E. Novak Branch 28 Reporter Happy Birthday, America! And with that thought in mind, congratulations to those celebrating their special days, whether it be a birthday or anniversary. We welcome to our William Penn family Steven A. and Brian-Branch 34 member John Catlos recently graduated from high school with a 4.15 QPA. He will enter Duquesne University this fall. na N. Vargo. Congratulations to the Youngstown women’s bowling team who placed well in the final standings at the tournament. Details on our annual branch picnic will be available next month. The Mount Alvernia Friary may have had a change of leadership, but the Pentecost pilgrimage was still held on May 30 with people in attendance from as far as Ontario, Canada. A beautiful Hungarian Mass was celebrated at the outdoor altar. The fall pilgrimage will be held Sept. 12. Our thoughts and best wishes go to all our friends who may be feeling a little under the weather. Long distance wishes to Joan Mauerman. Special get well wishes go to Irene Tomory who recently fell and broke her ankle. She was aided in her recovery by a surprise her family had been arranging since early spring. As a teen, Irene quit high school so she could get a job to help her family. As time went by, less time became available to complete her studies. But, during this past winter her sons arranged for her, without her knowledge, to complete the assignments needed to earn her diploma. So this June she was presented her diploma by the Campbell Schools superintendent. Well done, Irene. With your participation we were able to raise $ 100 for Habitat for Humanity of Pittsburgh and $300 for the Hungarian Heritage Center in New Brunswick, N.J. We recently had the privilege of seeing the Center first-hand, and it certainly is an active part of the Hungarian community. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Center if you are ever in that area, and please continue to support its efforts so that it can remain a vital part of our heritage. Graduation ceremonies seem to be part of everyone’s schedule these days. We wish all our graduates the very best in their future endeavors. One of those graduating this year was John S. Catlos, son of Steve and Margie Catlos, who graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School on June 16. John placed eighth in a class of 200 students with a 4.15 QPA. He was a member of the National Honor Society, History Club and yearbook staff. He also was a three-year letterman in soccer and captain of the volleyball team. John will attend Duquesne University in the fall, majoring in mathematics. He will be following in the footsteps of his brother Robert, 21, who is a junior occupational therapy major and dean’s list honoree at Duquesne. Congratulations to Christine Pastor, daughter of Bill and Suzanne Pastor of Kansas City, Kan., and granddaughter of Lou and Ann Kubus, who married Bradford Nelson May 15 in Denver. The couple will make their home in Denver where Christine is employed by Johnson & Johnson, and Brad is a CPA. Branch 44 Akron, OH By Elizabeth K. Darago Branch 44 President The word for the June Heritage Day was "krumpli." We demonstrated and sampled three different dishes made with krumpli (potatoes). The first was pogaci from the William Penn cookbook. A basket of fresh, hot pogaci greeted members as they entered the door. Next, came "potato logs.” The recipe for the potato logs was provided by Branch 44 member Betty Petroff. Finally, a pot of "Hungarian meatballs in paprika sauce” was prepared from a recipe in The Little Book of Hungarian Paprika. Three tasty dishes made with potatoes. Nagyon jó! Join us at our annual picnic, Saturday, July 10, from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. at 1643 - 13th St. SW, Akron. Bring a dish to share and your own table service. Make your reservations by July 7 so we will know how much meat and fix’ns to buy. Call (216) 753- 5270 or (216) 673-3347. The August bus tour will be held Saturday, Aug. 21. Come join Branch 44 for a trip to Marietta, Ohio, the "riverboat town.” We will travel by deluxe motorcoach. Once in Marietta, participants can choose between an 18thcentury buggy ride through treelined streets or a narrated trolley tour of Marietta. After lunch we’ll enjoy a tour on the Muskingum and Ohio rivers on an authentic sternwheeler, the Valley Gem. We’ll have time to relax, shop and visit the Coca-Cola Museum. Each guest will also receive a free gift on our visits to the Cedar Egg Factory and Rossi Pasta Shop. Then, it will be time to board the Becky Thatcher Showboat for an old-time melodrama, "Orphan’s Revenge.” We’ll boo the black-hearted villain, cheer the brave hero, and "aah” over the orphan’s plight.
