MAURER CONYNGHAM, PA — The students and staff of the first William Penn Association Hungarian Language Camp were saddened by the death of John Maurer, a student at that 1990 camp. Mr. Maurer, 72, died Dec. 5,1992, at St. Luke Manor. One of his fellow students, Elizabeth White, said that "John was one of the most enthusiastic and excited” students following the camp because "now, at last, he could actually speak Hungarian with his mother and she could write letters to him in Hungarian. ” He was bom in Beaverdale, Pa., the son of Elizabeth Maliczki Maurer of Johnstown, Pa, and the late Stephen Maurer. He was a member of Branch 59 Windber, Pa. He was a retired insurance manager and agency director for State Farm Insurance and a member of several professional organizations. In 1989, he was named Citizen of the Year by the Conyngham Valley Civic Organization for his extensive community service, which included serving as a director and officer for the local chapter of Meals on Wheels. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 47 years, Agnes Valko Maurer; a daughter, Roseanne Morris of Berwyn, Pa.; a son, John of Bloomington, Ind.; a brother, Steve of Trenton, N.J.; two sisters, Margie Wills of Johnstown and Elaine Wilson of Beaverdale; and two grandchildren.
