Branch 10 Barton, OH Branch 40 Martins Ferry, OH Branch 349 Weirton, WV By Louis A. Fodor National Director A total of 140 persons, most of them members of the William Penn, attended the Ohio Valley Hungarian American Cultural Society’s 34th Annual Spring Banquet April 17. OVHACS President John László welcomed the guests, Bob Tomlinson offered the invocation, Pat Bennett led the pledge of allegiance, and Lou Fodor and Joe Tocash led everyone in the singing of the "Star-Spangled Banner” and "Himnusz.” After a very tasty dinner, Mr. László introduced the officers, charter members and visiting dignitaries. He then called on Louis Fodor, member of the William Penn Association Board of Directors, to make some comments and bring everyone up to date on happenings at the Association. Mr. Fodor announced the dates for the William Penn’s bowling and golf tournaments, its Hungarian Language Camp, and the dinner-dance hosted by the Hungarian Classroom Committee at the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Fodor also urged those present to give to the American Hungarian Foundation’s current fund-raising drive. He noted that the Foundation’s Hungarian Heritage Center is home to the largest collection of Hungarian items in the country. The evening’s main speaker was U.S. Rep. Douglas Applegate of Ohio’s 18th Congressional District. Rep. Applegate spoke on the American "melting pot” and how it has enhanced the cultural heritage of different nationalities and moved the country forward. Afterwards, guests joined Mr. Fodor and Mr. Tocash in the singing of traditional Hungarian melodies, about 10 in all. The program concluded with music provided by Dorothy and Company, the "company” being Dan Laslo, Louis Fodor, Francis Duska and John Seto. A very good time was had by all, and everyone began looking forward to the OVHACS picnic scheduled for June 21. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn D. We hope she is feeling better by now. Mary, you have been missed. Congratulations to Samantha Gall on her engagement and upcoming wedding on June 19. Our new meeting location drew many compliments from those in attendance. Our branch is planning to send a women’s team to the national bowling tournament in Pittsburgh. Several additional members will be going to cheer the team on and enjoy the fraternal hospitality. We all wish our ladies good luck. We are sorry to report that our longtime faithful member George Tokár is ill. We wish you a speedy recovery, George. We are looking ahead to the annual golf tournament which will be held in Columbus. The Turnberry Golf Course is in excellent shape and awaiting the arrival of William Penn golfers. We have reserved tee times from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 23, so golfers may play the course before the tournament on Saturday. Congratulations to Branch 129 member William I. Bracken III who, at age 2, recently won the fishing contest at the annual D.A.C., Inc. picnic. Among those he outshined were his father William, who won the contest in 1989 and 1991.
