Struff, retired national secretary­­treasurer of the Greater Beneficial Union of Pittsburgh, was recently honored as the 1992 Fraternalist of the Year by the Fraternal Soci­eties of Greater Pittsburgh (FSGP). This is the highest award be­stowed by the FSGP, an associa­tion representing more than 500,000 members of fraternal benefit societies in the Greater Pittsburgh area. A native of Germany, Mr. Struff became of member of GBU in 1963 while living in Toledo, Ohio. In 1966 he became a dis­trict representative and proceed­ed to become GBU’s top pro­ducer for many years. In 1966 and 1970, he served as a national delegate to GBU’s na­tional convention. At the 1970 convention, he was elected re­gional vice president-south and held that position until July 1981 when he was elected national secretary. In 1990, the offices of national secretary and national treasurer were combined, and Mr. Struff become GBU’s first national secretary-treasurer. He retired in December 1992. Mr. Struff is a former director and past president of both the Pennsylvania and Ohio fraternal congresses. In 1986, the Ohio Fraternal Congress named him its Fraternalist of the Year. He also is a former director of the National Fraternal Congress of America, a past president of the NFCA Secretaries’ Section, and former chairman of several NFCA committees. In addition to his service to the fraternal benefit system, Mr. Struff was one of the founders of the Toledo German-American Festival Society. He also has served as the master of cere­monies at the Cleveland October­­fest since 1979, and was named honorary lieutenant governor of the State of Ohio in 1979. On Nov. 15,1990, the German Consulate in New York presented him with the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition of his contributions to the strengthen­ing of relations between the United States and Germany. Mr. Struff is the 18th recipient of the FSGP’s Fraternalist of the Year award.
