WPA adds portrait to gallery of officers PITTSBURGH — Since the mid- I950’s, the Association has honored many of its past national officers by hanging their portraits in the Home Office. Recently, the face of a current national officer joined the gallery of individuals who have helped make the William Penn a leader both in the Hungarian American community and among fraternal benefit societies. National Vice President-Treasurer Frances A. Furedy was the guest of honor Oct. 26 for the ceremonial unveiling of her portrait at the Home Office. On hand for the ceremony were the entire Official Family, several past national officers, the Home Office staff and a number of invited guests. National Vice President-Secretary George S. Charles Jr. served as the event’s master of ceremonies. He along with Chairman Joseph P. Arvay, National President E. E. Vargo, Legal Counsel Emil W. Herman, former National Secretary Gus G. Nagy and former National Director William C. Kohut praised Ms. Furedy for her 51 years of devoted service to the Association. Ms. Furedy thanked the Board of Directors for their decision to honor her in this way, and she thanked all those in attendance for their support and best wishes. In reflecting on her long years of service to the Association, Ms. Furedy said she always tried her best to do what needed to be done in order to strengthen the William Penn. She also pledged to continue working for the betterment of the society. Since the day of the unveiling was also Ms. Furedy’s birthday, all the guests joined in singing a chorus of "Happy Birthday.” After the official ceremonies, guests were invited to the board room where a buffet lunch was served. Merry Christmas from the Officers, Directors, Auditors and Employees of William Penn Association Branches show fraternal spirit by distributing holiday baskets PITTSBURGH — Once again, William Penn members are demonstrating the true meaning of fraternalism by helping to make this holiday season a happier one Inside ■ Hungarian Room Committee hosts dinner..............Page 2. ■ Branch 226 donates trophy to WPA archives.........Page 2. ■ The latest news and notes from our branches .... Next Deadline December 18 for many needy families in their communities. Association branches across the country have donated or have pledged to donate baskets filled with turkeys, hams and other food items to those less fortunate than themselves. The donations are part of the Holiday Basket program sponsored by the Home Office. For each turkey or ham a branch purchases to donate to a needy family, the Home Office will give that branch $25 to buy additional food for the basket. Each branch can be reimbursed for up to three baskets of food, or $75 ($25 per basket, one basket per family). Several branches distributed their food baskets during the Thanksgiving holiday. Some branches are extending the spirit of the Holiday Basket program by also contributing to other similar projects in their communities. We commend all those branches which have joined us in this worthwhile program and have given a little hope to those who desparately need it. Members to have two opportunities to travel to Hungary with WPA next year PITTSBURGH - As William Penn members finish up their Christmas gift shopping, we would encourage them to take a moment to consider giving themselves a gift next summer—a gift that will produce memories to last a lifetime. The gift? A seat on one of the Association-sponsored tours to Hungary. At its October meeting, the Board of Directors passed a resolution authorizing the Association to again sponsor two trips to Hungary in 1993. The first tour will leave the United States on June 24 and return July 8, and the second will run from Sept. 9 to 23. By offering two tours, the William Penn is making it easier for more members to find the time to travel with us. Both tours will have the same itinerary, so no matter which tour you sign up for, you will enjoy an exciting and fun vacation. We hope you will be among those exploring the beauty of Hungary with us in 1993. More information on our tours will appear in future issues of the William Penn Life.
