Need for hurricane relief remains great The tent cities erected in the wake of hurricanes Andrew and Iniki may be coming down, but the need for help among families affected by these two terrible storms remains great. With the holidays approaching, many families face what should be a joyful time of year wracked with the pain of remembering what once was. You can help brighten their holidays and raise their hopes for the future by continuing to support the ongoing relief efforts. So, again, we ask you, in the true fraternal spirit, to join with us to touch lives by sending your contribution to: American Red Cross, c/o Mellon Bank - Hurricane Relief, P.O. Box 317997, Pittsburgh, PA 15251-7997. Branches to hold elections, family Christmas parties PITTSBURGH — With the holiday season fast approaching, it is time for William Penn branches to make preparations for two of the most important annual events in the fraternal year: the election of branch officers and the family Christmas party. The By-Laws of the William Penn Association (Article VI, Section 606) state that "the election of Branch Officers shall be held at the annual meeting in December. Each Adult Life Benefit Member shall have one (1) vote for each office. Elections shall be by a majority of those present at the annual meeting. Officers elected at the annual meeting shall be installed immediately.” According to the same section of the By-Laws, "only an Adult Life Benefit Member is eligible to be a Branch Officer. No Full- Time Agent or any employee of any other life insurance company or society is eligible to be a Branch Officer.” An adult life benefit member is defined as a person who has attained the age of 16 and "who is insured for life or endowment benefits (but not under an annuity plan) by the Association (Article XXVI, Section 2600).” The By-Laws also state that each branch shall elect a president, one vice president, a recording secretary, a treasurer and either two or three auditors. "There shall not be any other Branch Officers or boards appointed or elected,” however the offices of recording secretary and treasurer may be held by the same person (Article VI, Section 608). We urge all members to attend their branch’s election meeting and take an active role in the affairs of their branch. We also urge members of all ages to attend their branch’s Christmas party. These parties are a lot of fun for both the young and young at heart. They also provide an excellent opportunity to meet your fellow members and to take the first step toward becoming an active member. Young members should be receiving their invitations in the mail soon. If your household does not receive an invitation, please call your branch’s contact person (as listed in the Branch Directory published in our September 1992 issue) to find out when and where your branch’s party will be held. Chairman meets heart patient Chairman of the Board Joseph P. Army (second from left) had the pleasure of meeting Jacinta Papp and her son Lorant on Sept. 6 in Passaic, N.]. Lorant had undergone life-saving heart surgery at Children’s Hospital in ’Newark. He has now recovered, and the Papps returned to their home in Csokvaomany, Hungary, on Sept. 19. Lorant’s surgery and trip to America were made possible through a program sponsored by Rotary International. During their stay in America, Lorant and his mother were aided and befriended by members of Branch 51 Passaic. Pictured with the Papp’s and Chairman Arvay are Branch 51 president Arthur Barillo (far right) and Branch 51 Coordinator and National Auditor Ernest J. Mozer Sr. Fraternal Congress holds annual meeting Inside NASHVILLE — More than 700 members and guests of nearly 100 fraternal benefit societies gathered here Sept. 23 to 26 to hear from representatives from the federal government, the volunteer world and the life insurance industry. The event was the 106th Annual Meeting of the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA), a trade association for fraternal benefit societies. NFCA officials and delegates from individual societies also met to discuss important issues facing the fraternal benefit system during the next year and to elect new officers for 1992-93. Representing the W illiam Penn Association at the meeting were Chairman of the Board Joseph P. Arvay and National President E. E. Vargo. U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Edward Dewerinski addressed the group at its opening session. "I look at this as a personal opportunity to say thank you to all of you for what you have done for me and my family and for others throughout the country,” he said. "You represent that positive element of what America is all about, all that is good and noble.” He also noted that "fraternals are a very interesting, vital and probably underestimated and unappreciated part of our world today.” President Bush sent greetings via telegram. He lauded fraternalists for "providing a vehicle through which concerned individuals can join together in the spirit of mutual assistance and service to others.” Elected to serve a one-year term as NFCA president was J. Michael Belz of San Antonio, president and chief executive officer of Catholic Life Insurance Union. William Heerman of the Aid Association for Lutherans was elected NFCA vice president. ■ The latest news and notes from our branches ....
