Branch 19 New Brunswick, NJ Congratulations to Patricia Colbert Pongrácz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Pongrácz of Boonton Township, N.J., who graduated cum laude from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., on May 29. Patricia has received a fouryear full fellowship to Brown University in Providence, R.I., where she will study art history in the A.M. Ph.D. program. "I wish to thank the William Penn scholarship committee for four years of support while I was at Holy Cross,” she said. Patricia and her parents are all members of Branch 19. Branch 27 Toledo, OH By Mary Ivancso Branch 27 Reporter It’s been a while, I know, but there is so much to write about. So, sit back and relax. First, the 49th Annual National Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days that were held in Dayton, Ohio, was a huge success. Steve Horvath and his members did a great job! We here in Toledo are proud of "Toledo’s Finest,” captained by Robert Ivancso, tournament secretary, and featuring bowlers S. J. Ivancso Jr., Robert Tyukody, David Bodnar and Andy Feyes. The team captured first place in the actual pin division for the sixth straight year. Nice work! Then, Robert Ivancso and doubles partner Richard Fekete Patricia Colbert Pongrácz of Branch 19 recently graduated from Holy Cross and will be studying for her doctorate at Brown University. took first place in the handicap doubles event. Robert also took first place in the all-events category. Ronald Reeder Jr. and David Cervetto finished third in the doubles event. This was the latter pair’s first appearance at the tournament, and they said that they will be back next year. Complete results from the tournament appear on Page 9. One more bowling note: all the entry forms submitted for the tournament were neatly printed or typed, but one entry, in my opinion, was the neatest one. It was submitted by Arline Reis of Branch 129 Columbus. It was done in calligraphy. Steve and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at the bowling banquet. All five of our children, their spouses and four grandchildren were there to bring happiness and joy to the occasion. They even had champagne, wedding cake and pictures in Maggie and Joe’s room. At the banquet National Director Michael Hrabar and his lovely wife Ann presented us with the Papal Blessing. National President A1 and Betty Vargo presented us with a picture that states: "A good marriage is like a handshakeno one has the upper hand.” Truer words were never stated. Thank you, everyone, for the cards, flowers and gifts. We will forever treasure the moment. At the delicious bowling dinner, Kim Steils of Toledo won the top prize in the door prize raffle, a bowling ball and bag. Next stop, New Brunswick, N.J., for the dedication of the Commemorative Tribute to all U.S. Armed Forces personnel of Hungarian descent. Going to the hospitality room, you could smell the food down from the elevator, through the corridor and to the room. Margo Beke made an army kettle of chicken soup with fine noodles. There was also a huge roaster of stuffed cabbage and more. Ann Hrabar made the best and crunchiest garlic pickles I have ever tasted. Ruth Vasvary also assisted with the food. The dedication ceremony took place on June 6 in the courtyard of the Hungarian Heritage Center. I will never forget the site of National President Vargo, Rev. Imre Bertalan, Joseph Arvay and George Dózsa marching into the courtyard, all wearing sashes bearing the Hungarian colors, with the officers and directors of both societies following them. I got goose pimples watching them, and I still do when I think of it. A reception was held following the impressive ceremony. Our deepest sympathies to the families of Rose Petro and Paul W. Kovács and to Emma Toth on the loss of her sister, Helen Fekete. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy E. Novak Branch 28 Reporter Happy Birthday, America! Branch 159 Phoenixville, PA By Caroline Kovach Branch 159 Reporter Congratulations to our ladies’ bowling team which finished tied for second place in the team event at the national bowling tournament. The two men’s teams also did themselves proud in the singles and doubles events. In true fraternal fashion, our teams combined bowlers from Trenton, N.J.; Allentown, Pa.; Coatesville, Pa.; Northampton, Pa.; Phoenixville, Pa.; Pottstown, Pa.; and Franklin, Ohio. All enjoyed a great weekend in Dayton. We also congratulate the branch officers and members of Branch 249 Dayton who worked so hard to make the bowling tournament a great success. Next year the Association will host its 50th annual bowling tournament in Pittsburgh. We are already planning to participate in this historic event. Branch 159 also participated in the Hungarian Festival held in New Brunswick, N.J., on June 6. National Director Bill Kovach carried in the parade a majestic, 14-foot tall, oak flag pole displaying the American flag. The flag pole is about 75 years old and was donated to our branch by Mr. and Mrs. Louis Papp. It was previously used by the branch of the former Rákóczi Aid Association when Mrs. Papp’s father was that branch’s representative. After the parade, the flag pole was turned over to Dr. August Molnár, president of the American Hungarian Foundation. It will be displayed in the William Penn Room at the Hungarian Heritage Center in New Brunswick. For any insurance needs, please contact Bill Kovach at (215) 933- 8391. And please don’t forget to support our scholarship fund. Branch 189 Alliance, OH By Betty Hamby Branch 189 Reporter On May 9 Branch 189 held its monthly meeting at the club hall. This was our last meeting until Sept. 5. On March 20, the club presented a performance by Jimmy and the Soul Blazers. Everyone attending this successful event enjoyed dancing and a good time.
