Cher, 92, illustrious member and retired fraternal affairs administrator for the Association, died Jan. 2, 1992, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Fountain Hill, Pa. A native of Gyor, Hungary, Mr. Cher was a member of Branch 48 New York. He served as an employee of the Association for 28 years before his retirement in 1964. He began his career in February 1936 as a member of the field force for the former Verhovay Fraternal Insurance Association. During his 19 years in the field, he served as a district organizer, division manager and field supervisor. He also served as a delegate to and secretary of the 1939 Verhovay national convention. In 1955 he left the field force to accept the position of assistant secretary and office manager at the Home Office. Four years later the William Penn Board of Directors appointed him as administrator of the new fraternal affairs department. As fraternal affairs administrator he organized several national bowling tournaments, expanded the children’s Christmas party program, organized dance groups for children, served as assistant editor of the Hungarian language William Penn and encouraged many other fraternal and social activities. The Board awarded Mr. Cher the Association’s Illustrious Citation in recognition of his outstanding service and unfailing dedication to the Association. He is survived by his wife, Julia Kristóf Cher. May he rest in peace. LESLIE KÖNNYŰ (From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch) ST. LOUIS — Leslie Könnyű, a poet and chronicler of the achievements of Hungarian-Americans, died Feb. 24, 1992, of a stroke at St. Anthony’s Medical Center. Mr. Könnyű, 77, was a member of William Penn Branch 209 St. Louis. He wrote, edited or translated more than 50 books, most of them about the culture of his native Hungary. His "Hungarians in the Mississippi Valley,” published in 1976, was believed to be the first history book on Hungarian settlers in the Midwest. He also published several studies on immigration, pointing out the historical discrimination against and exploitation of immigrants in this country. His own first love was poetry. While he published much of his prose in English, he wrote most of his poetry in Hungarian. Mr. Könnyű was born in Tamási, Hungary, and was a teacher in Hungary from 1936 to 1945, when he fled to Austria after Soviet troops occupied Hungary. In 1949, he and his wife, Elizabeth, and their three children came to the United States. He received a doctorate from Joseph Eötvös Science University in Budapest in 1989. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by nine grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. Memorials may be made to the renovation fund for St. Mary of Victories Church, 744 S. Third St., St. Louis, MO 63102. May he rest in peace. REV. PAUL MARKOVITS (From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) CARMICHAELS, PA — The Rev. Paul Markovits, pastor emeritus of two Lutheran congregations, died of cancer March 2, 1992, in Sunset Point Nursing Home in Clearwater, Fla. He was a member of William Penn Branch 34 Pittsburgh. Rev. Markovits, 76, served at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Carmichaels in Greene County, Pa., and Jacobs Evangelical Lutheran Church of Masontown in Fayette County, Pa. from 1970 until his retirement in 1982. Born April 29, 1915, in Szarvas, Hungary, Rev. Markovits left there for Canada in 1935 and graduated from Waterloo Lutheran Seminary in Ontario in 1939. After posts in Windsor, Ontario, and Lyons, N.Y., he accepted a call in 1946 from the First Hungarian Lutheran Church of Hazelwood, Pa. Rev. Markovits sponsored 150 displaced persons and 263 refugees from World War II who relocated here. After the communists used armed forces to suppress the Hungarian rebellion of 1956, he organized a committee in Pittsburgh to help the new resettlement program for the freedom fighters. In 1957, he went to Austria to work with freedom fighters who escaped Hungary and hoped to move to America. He is survived by his wife, Anna I. Bogad Markovits; two sons, Dr. Paul S. Markovits of Ballwin, Mo., and Timothy G. Markovits of Mt. Joy, Pa.; a daughter, Carol Ann Markovits- Goehring of Upper Sandusky, Ohio; three grandchildren; two brothers, Stephen Markovics of Spring Hill, Fla., and Dr. John Szarka of Hungary; and a sister, Suzanne Szanto of Quebec, Canada.
