Page 4, William Penn Life, March 1992 Branch News Children attending Branch 296 Springdale’s annual family Christmas party were mesmerized by the magician who performed for them. These children enjoy "monkey-ing around” at the family Christmas party hosted by Branch 44 Akron, Ohio, in December. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 President At their monthly meeting on Feb. 12, the members of Branch 14 began planning the branch’s social activities for the year. Several ideas were discussed, including a trip to Sea World, a Goodtime II cruise along the Cuyahoga River, an outing to the Metroparks Zoo and a Lolly the Trolly tour of Cleveland. Our goal is to sponsor activities of interest to Branch 14 members of all ages, at greatly discounted prices. Bob Perkins, Karen Perkins, Caroline Lanzara and Dawn Ward are researching the above mentioned activities and will report on them at the next branch meeting on March 11. As soon as dates and charges are determined, they will be published in the William Penn Life. Remember, if you have a child in your family or know of a child who is not a member of William Penn, there is an extremely reasonable way for them to enroll. For information regarding this plan of $20,000 coverage for only $25 per year, please call the district office at 838-1200. All Branch 14 members are encouraged to attend meetings on the second Wednesday of every month at 4116 Rockside Road, Independence at 7:30 p.m. You will enjoy the fraternal spirit among your fellow Branch 14 members while helping to plan the best year ever. Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Eva Laczina Branch 15 Secretary As we read our daily newspapers and listen to radio and television broadcasts, we see and hear constant reminders of the ongoing turmoil within Yugoslavia. However, it is not only Croatians and Serbians who are being affected by this conflict. Thousands of Hungarian refugees are fleeing from the disputed areas and seeking refuge in Hungary. Many of these refugees have experienced the tragedies of war. Many have lost their homes and other priceless personal possessions, never to be recovered. Many have lost loved ones, as well. And so many are now in search of a new life in Hungary, while many others simply wait for the fighting to cease so that they can return and resume their lives, hoping to find whatever they left behind still intact. For these refugees there is constant unrest. There is worrying— whether the wounded will be given proper medical treatment, whether one will find shelter, whether one will find food. It was for these refugees that the St. Stephan King of Hungary Church in Chicago decided to host—with the help of our dear Father Somos—a benefit dinner. Other local organizations joined in our event, and with their help, we were able to raise $ 11,000 for the benefit of the refugees. We would like to thank the William Penn Home Office for its generous contribution and all those who reached out and helped those who are in need. It was truly an honor to be part of such an event and witness genuine compassion and kindness. Branch 27 Toledo, OH By Mary Ivancso Branch 27 Secretary-Treasurer Branch officers elected at our December meeting were: Robert A. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Kathy Novak Branch 28 Reporter Slowly, but surely, spring will soon be here. We hope everyone has endured the long, cold days of winter. Keeping everyone busy during these cold days were the many dinners, bazaars and hurka and kolbász making sponsored by the area Hungarian churches and the Hungarian Club. We welcome back to the Youngstown area John and Helen Kaluczky’s daughter Jeanette Lund and grandson Charles, who recently relocated from Coral Gables, Fla. It is nice to have another Branch 28 member back. However, we regret to report that active member Frank Konya has decided to move to Dayton, Ohio, to live with his daughter. We’ll miss him but wish him lots of luck. In order for all branch activities to be successful, we need as many members as possible to attend our monthly meetings and help us plan, as well as participate in, our activities.
