NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Actor and painter Tony Curtis and former deputy secretary of state John C. Whitehead were honored Dec. 10 by the American Hungarian Foundation as its George Washington laureates for 1991. The Foundation presented the awards at the 30th annual George Washington Awards dinner held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Representing the William Penn Association at the dinner were National President E. E. Vargo and Chairman of the Board Joseph P. Arvay. The award was inspired by the statue of George Washington erected in Budapest’s City Park in 1906 by the Hungarian immigrants living in America. The Foundation presents the award each year to those who have made eminent contributions in the broad field on human knowledge, the arts, commerce, industry, the sciences and understanding among people and nations. Mr. Curtis was honored for his accomplishments as a motion picture star, fine artist and honorary chairman of the Emanuel Foundation for Hungarian Culture.
