Page 4, William Penn Life, February 1992 Branch News I Santa Claus shares a moment with the dozens of children who attended the annual Christmas party hosted by Branch 14 Cleveland. Members of Branch 8 Johnstown, Pa., gathered to celebrate the holiday season on Dec. 8 at the branch’s annual family Christmas party. The Rev. Joseph Somos and Branch 15 Coordinator Arpad Laczina present holiday gift baskets from the branch to two young Hungarians. Young members of Branch 16 Perth Amboy, N.J., await their turn to tell their Christmas wishes to Santa at the branch’s annual Christmas party. Branch 8 Johnstown, PA By Vera Petruska Branch 8 President Branch 8’s children’s Christmas party was held Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Hungarian Reformed Church social hall. Our Santa had an accident and could not attend. But, the children said that Santa was at the football game! The children received gifts of money, song books, coloring books and crayons. The adults received calendars and pens. Refreshments were served and a social time was enjoyed by all. We wish to thank the William Penn Home Office for the generous contribution to the party. Branch officers elected to serve in 1992 are: Vera Petruska, president; Mary Ann Groshans, vice president; Elizabeth Maurer, secretary and auditor; Sándor Yukas, treasurer; and Elaine Engle, auditor. Our meetings are held the second Sunday of each month at 1:00 pm. at the Hungarian Reformed Church, corner of Ninth Avenue and Chestnut Street. All branch members are urged to attend. Best wishes for 1992. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 President The first Branch 14 meeting of the new year was held Jan. 8. A motion was carried for the branch to continue the same activities it has conducted in previous years, including its annual Christmas party, the sponsorship of members who attend the national bowling and golf tournaments and a summer family activity. Branch President Dawn Ward announced she will appoint a committee to plan activities, including a summer activity in lieu of Geauga Lake. Thanks go to new refreshment chairwoman Irene Evans who will provide beverages and desserts after every meeting. Carol Perkins is the new sunshine chairwoman. If you know of any Branch 14 member who is ill, please contact Carol at (216) 238-6465 or the local office at (216) 838-1200. A motion was carried to donate $50 to the West Side Hungarian Reformed Church. The money will go towards renting a truck to transport items collected by the church for refugee camps in Hungary. We at Branch 14 are saddened by the death of former national president Elmer Charles. Mr. Charles attended many Branch 14 functions during his presidency and was always very supportive of our branches fraternal activities. He will be missed very much and remembered as a very strong, stable leader respected by many. This year will feature many activities appealing to branch members of all ages. We encourage all members to attend our monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at 4116 Rockside Road,Independence. Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Eva Laczina Branch 15 Secretary This past December Branch 15 once again held a lovely annual Christmas party. But, this year was a little more special because our branch distributed holiday baskets to three young Hungarian men. As usual, our Christmas celebration started off after Mass when everyone went downstairs to the church hall. Those entering the hall were greeted by the enticing aroma of freshly cooked sausage. Once everyone had settled in their seats, the Hungarian Scout group presented a wonderful little Christmas show. As the show ended, the lights were dimmed and everyone grew quiet. Then, all of a sudden, from the rear of the hall St. Nicholas appeared. The children stared in wonder as he made his way to the stage. St. Nicholas began to distribute gifts to all the children as they approached the stage, reminding each of them to remain good so that they will receive gifts next year as well. After he distributed all the gifts, St. Nicholas advised us all to be good not only at Christmas time, but throughout the entire year. He then made his way to the rear of the hall and left in the same merry fashion he entered. By this time all of us were quite hungry. Not to worry—there was plenty of delicious sausage and biscuits for everyone to enjoy. For dessert we chose from a wonderful variety of delicious pastries, all prepared by the many women who attend our church. After our meal, the adults reminisced about old times and Christmases past, while the children tore through their gifts. Father Somos presented holiday baskets to three young Hungarian men who had recently arrived from Hungary. Father Somos noted that these small gifts from the William Penn may not only help them now but also make their Christmas a little brighter. We would like to thank all those people who contributed their time and effort to make this party a success. On Dec. 15, the same day as our party, our branch held its annual election of officers. Those elected were: Imre Vida, president; Mike Horvath, vice president; Eva Laczina, secretary; and Joseph Marocsik, treasurer. Our branch coordinator is Arpad Laczina. All of us at Branch 15 would like to wish all of our members and the Home Office staff a wonderful and prosperous 1992. Branch 16 Perth Amboy, NJ On Dec. 14, Branch 16 celebrated its annual Christmas party. The day started off with hot dogs and chips for everyone, followed by the singing of holiday songs. The children and adults were then entertained by Umbei the Clown who put everyone into a joyous mood. Umbei displayed his extraordinary magical talents and finished his act by distributing cookies and balloons to all the children. The children also were given the chance to pet Puffball, the clown’s ra bbit. Finally, the moment that everyone had been waiting for arrived as Santa Claus entered. Everyone told Santa their holiday wishes and then enjoyed cakes and other goodies. The party was a huge success. Before the party our branch chose its officers for 1992. Elected were: George F. Mirkovich, president; Mary Mészáros, vice president; Steve Mészáros, recording secretary-treasurer; and Michaelene Mirkovich and Annette David, auditors. Branch 18 Detroit, MI By Michele Grobbel Branch 18 Secretary On Dec. 2 Branch 18 held its annual election of officers. Those elected were: John Molnár, president; Peter Bandy, vice president; Michele Grobbel, secretary; Steve Szalai, treasurer; and Frank Tima, Elsie Kantor and Frank Kender, auditors. We wish the newly elected officers a successful year. Another successful children’s Christmas party was held on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the social club. About 150 guests were in attendance. The children enjoyed Disco Pete the clown who entertained them and painted their faces. Of course, best of all was a visit from none other than Santa Claus (played by Joe Uri). After gifts were distributed, everyone enjoyed refreshments and socializing with each other.
