Fodor) PITTSBURGH — On Sept. 9, the 32nd General Convention honored those distinguished members and friends of our Association who had passed away since the last convention with a special memorial service. Prof. August J. Molnár, pres, dent of the American Hungarian Foundation, opened the service with a prayer in memory of the deceased. The Rev. Louis Illés, pastor of the Hungarian Reformed Church of Duquesne, Pa., read two appropriate passages from the Bible. National President E. E. Paul Bolvary, pastor of St. Ann’s Church in Hazelwood, Pa., said a prayer in Hungarian for the deceased. Fodor) County of Allegheny Board of County Commissioners Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania —= Resolution -WHEREAS, Allegheny County is blessed with individuals and organizations contributing to our ethnic and cultural abundance, thus creating one of America's great ethnic-oriented centers; and WHEREAS, the William Penn Association was founded in 1886 in Hazelton, Pennsylvania, by 13 Hungarian coal miners and was chartered the same year with its noble goal of extending a helping hand to each other, and to the many Hungarian immigrants who struggled in the mines and industrial centers of America, their new homes where they sought opportunity; and WHEREAS, the organization proved to be God-sent during the nation’s industrial revolution which still lacked sick benefits, unemployment compensation and death benefits, thus giving impetus to fraternalism in this Great Land; and WHEREAS, the fraternal group benefited by a series of merges throughout the past century, and moved its home office to Pittsburgh, so that today the William Penn Association stands tall as the unrivaled major Hungarian fraternal society in America compassionately serving its goals to provide benefits to its members and beneficiaries; provide housing for the elderly and disabled members, and scholarships for the children; and to insure the preservation of Hungarian culture and ideals in this wonderful land of America—in accordance with the goals of the Founding Fathers of both the Association and the United States; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this Board of County Commissioners does hereby commend the William Penn Association for more than a century of dedicated philanthropic service to its grateful members, and as we heartily welcome the delegates and their families to the 32nd General Convention in one of America’s most livable and hospitable communities, we proudly proclaim September 9 to 11,1991, "William Penn Association Days” in this proud County of Allegheny.
