September 1991, William Penn Life, Page 5 Branch News Branch 15 Chicago, IL By Frank Balogh Branch 15 Honorary President Branch 15 members attended the official installation of the Rev. Joseph Somos as pastor of St. Stephen King of Hungary Church in Chicago. Among those joining Rev. Somos at the ceremonies were Bishop Placido Rodriguez and church founders Antal Kovács and his wife Irene and Frank Balogh and his wife Mathilda. Mr. Kovács and Mr. Balogh are two of the 13 founding members who established St. Emery Church on Washtenaw Avenue in 1929. Even in those hard times, each of the 13 donated $500 toward building the church. They will remain loyal to St. Stephen King of Hungary Church "until God calls them to the eternal land,” Mr. Balogh said. "This church is ours. Here we can pray in Hungarian, praise the Lord, sing and, sometimes, cry.” Welcoming Rev. Joseph Somos (seated left) as new pastor of St. Stephen King of Hungary Church in Chicago are Bishop Placido Rodriguez, Antal and Irene Kovács, and Frank and Mathilda Balogh. Darago Branch 44 President Autumn in Ohio. School bells are ringing, and we wish Branch 44 student-members a very successful school year. Branch 44 is planning a special November meeting. It’s "Bingo for Scholarships!” All Branch 44 members, their families and friends are invited. There will be door prizes, surprises and refreshments. Net proceeds will go to the William Penn scholarship fund from Branch 44. Carmen Darago, a Branch 44 scholarship recipient and accounting student at Kent State University, will help draw numbers. Val Thrasher, a "travelling” Branch 44 member, visited her daughter in Minneapolis, drove to Akron to attend the July picnic, then packed her bags for a three-week trip to Spain with the Jesuits to celebrate St. Ignatius Loyola’s 500th birthday. She wrote that the birthday Mass attracted priests and bishops from all over the world and was attended by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia of Spain. "Our three priests made the front pages of all the big papers the following day,” she wrote. Welcome back, Val. As we move into the second half of 1991, here’s a schedule of branch activities for you to mark on your calendars: Sept. 15: General Convention update. Oct. 13: Insurance meeting and Hungary video (new). Nov. 10: Bingo, Bingo, Bingo. Dec. 8: Christmas party. All of the above start at 2:00 p.m. at the CYO building, Hóban High School.
