For the children, the Festival will again feature a series of fun By Paul Paterra The (McKeesport, Pa.) Daily News McKeesport, pa — For a McKeesport man, who has returned after serving in Operation Desert Storm, an appearance in Pittsburgh’s "Welcome Home” parade June 15 rounded out what was a hectic week. Coast Guard Machinery Technician Fred Stipkovits, a member of William Penn Branch 226 McKeesport, started his parade journey by participating in the nation’s capital June 8, then marching down Broadway in New York’s ticker tape affair. It ended with a chance to walk on home navpmpnt in PiffckiiritkU rtnrn^o It also was a hectic time for his wife, Carol, and his two sons, Fred, 12, and Steve, 10, who watched their father in the Pittsburgh event after getting the chance to see him honored in Washington, D.C. But there was a special twist to that trip, as the Stipkovits family was wired for its entire journey by NBC News. The hectic times really began Jan. 13, when the reservist left Pittsburgh for 35 days of training at Camp Landing, Jacksonville, Fla. After a delay from his originally scheduled Feb. 16 departure date, Stipkovits and crew finally u/erp skinned nvf>rs«is March 4. He said they arrived in Dharan at 3:15 a.m. Saudi Arabian time and were greeted by rain. "When we got on the plane, they said it hadn’t rained in some parts of Saudi Arabia in 400 years. We got off the plane and it’s raining.” But that was the last of that type of weather the McKeesport man saw until the local rainstorms invaded McKeesport on June 11, the day he finally returned home. Stipkovits’ tenure in Saudi Arabia started off with a span of 19 days of rotating watches as a boat engineer, usually 3-11 a.m., on "Raider Boats” stationed on the norf. "Our main objective was antiterrorism and anti-sabotage for the Port of Damman.” As the war effort ended, the 113-member crew, which shared the area with an estimated 80 Naval personnel, participated in watch rotation and also handled "stand down” duties, which involved packing and sanitizing all the equipment. After those duties all were completed and the last bit of ammunition and equipment was gone from the port, it was time to head stateside. The first stop was Washington, D.C. and the June 8 parade hon-----See STIPKOVITS Page 2 games and activities designed exclusively for our young guests. The games will start at about 2:00 p.m. and will be supervised by several adults. Parents can also join their children for a free hayride around our wonderful 500-plus-acre facility, or take a guided tour of our Home. Tours of the Home, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, will be offered at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. Guests can also sit back and enjoy the music of local performers, including a band featuring National Auditor Louis A. Fodor. At 4:00 p.m. attention will focus on the end of the thoroughfare where two area dance troupes will present a program of Hungarian folk dancing. The Hungarian Ethnic Group of Western Pennsylvania will perform first, followed by the William Penn Association Magyar Folk Dancers of McKeesport, Pa. The day will conclude with the drawings for the event’s various raffles. This list of activities is by no means complete. To list all the things that will be happening at the Festival would be nearly impossible. Organizers say that just about anything that makes a summer day enjoyable for the entire family will be at the Festival. We hope that all of our members and friends and people living in communities near our Home will bring their families and join us for this special event.
