April 1991, William Penn Life, Page 7 Branch News Several Branch 89 members huddled up with the driver of the bus which took them on their recent trip to Atlantic City. These Branch 89 members gather outside the Trump Plaza Hotel/Casino during their trip to Atlantic City this February. Four generations of the Douglas family, all Branch 800 members: Leroy (center), son Robert (right), grandson William, great-grandson Nicholas. Continued from Page 6 dock, winner of the $10 drawing from all returned membership forms. Thanks to all the members who contributed. In January, Branch President Elizabeth Darago visited 100- year-young member Theresa Weaver in Copley, Ohio. Mrs. Weaver talked about her life on the farm with her husband and family. She compared the blooming spring flowers given her by Branch 44 to the "beautiful flowers my mother grew in Hungary.” Mrs. Weaver added, "thank my lodge for remembering me.” Mrs. Weaver, we’d never forget you. All members are invited to the Branch 44 spring meeting Sunday, April 7, at the CYO building, Hóban High School. Help send cards to the families who lost loved ones in Operation Desert Storm. Branch 51 Passaic, NJ By Arthur Barillo Branch 51 President Congratulations to our Branch Coordinator Ernie Mozer who, on March 12, completed 40 years of service with his employer, the Public Service Electric and Gas Company. Most of that time he worked at the Passaic Customer Service Center. Birthday wishes are also in order for Ernie. On the same date he celebrated his 61st birthday. It is hard to believe that four years have gone by, but it is time again for the General Convention this September. Our branch has been designated as Delegate District 6. We will have two delegates seated at the Convention. Election of our delegates will be held Sunday, May 5, at 2:00 p.m. at the American Hungarian Citizens Club, 21 New Schley St., Garfield. Please make every effort to attend this very important meeting. Refreshments will be served. Branch 89 Homestead, PA By Lisa S. Toth Branch 89 Auditor Homestead Branch 89 held its Second Annual Winter Trip to Atlantic City on Feb. 10 to 12. The accommodations were at the Trump Plaza Hotel/Casino on the Boardwalk. There were 42 people on the bus, a special DeBolt Series 990 bus which was equipped to show movies, much to the enjoyment of those on board. The bus also had a built-in card table which enabled several or our members to play various card games. After the card playing was over, we played several games of bingo which everyone enjoyed since it helped pass the travelling time spent on the bus. We also passed out souvenirs supplied by various merchants to everyone on board. Although our group contained no million dollar winners, everyone had fun (as is evident in the photos from our trip). We now eagerly await our annual fall trip to Atlantic City which, for the first time, will be for four days. Upcoming events for Branch 89 also include a trip to Wheeling Downs for the dog races and a summer picnic at lovely and serene Penn Scenic View. Branch 159 Phoenixville, PA By Caroline Kovach Branch 159 Reporter Phoenixville area members are getting ready to go to the annual bowling tournament in Pittsburgh on Memorial Day weekend. We have to defend our title since we won the national team event trophy last year. Also, Phoenixville members will be going to the annual National Golf Tournament, which will be held just a few miles north of Pittsburgh on July 12 and 13. Anyone in or around the Phoenixville area who is interested in attending either event should contact Branch Coordinator Bill Kovach at (215) 933- 8391 for more information. Branch 249 Dayton, OH By Albert G. Kertesz Branch 249 Vice President Now with the winter season over, we can look forward to brighter days, and this year seems to be shaping up to be an outstanding one, both on the national and local level. On April 13 our branch will hold its annual awards banquet to honor our current 50-year members and present trophies to the winners of our branch bowling league. Congratulations to you all. On May 5 our branch members will attend a meeting of Delegate District 28 to elect a delegate and alternate delegate to represent our district at the General Convention this September. All lifebenefit members age 18 and older are kindly requested to attend this meeting which will be held at St. Stephen’s hall at 3:30 p.m. Our branch will again be well represented at the National Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days. Branch President Steve Horvath has formulated the teams which we hope will bring home their share of the prizes. We also anticipate having representatives of our branch attend the National Golf Tournament. Plans are being made to have st branch sponsored fish-fry during the fall season. We’ll have more information on this in future issues. Branch 800 Altoona, PA By Vincent Frank Branch 800 President Our branch will be holding its annual Communion breakfast on Sunday, April 14. Mass will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 8:30 a.m., followed by breakfast at the Waffle King restaurant in Altoona. Branch 800 gave its annual charitable donations to the Huntingdon Correctional Institution and the Blair County Prison. Branch Vice President and Coordinator Leroy Douglas made the presentation to the Rev. David R. Becker, who received the donations on behalf of both facilities. Father Becker said he was grateful for our branch’s support and that the money will be used to help meet the spiritual needs of the inmates. We would like to welcome six new juvenile members to our branch: Trick Corinski, Nicholas S. Douglas, Michael A. Holtz, Tray Allen Roesch, Angela Simpson and Tyesa Lee Simpson. Both Nicholas and Michael are greatgrandsons of Leroy Douglas. Good luck to all our members and their families who are fishermen (and I know there are a lot of you out there). Trout season opens Saturday, April 13. Let’s hope we will have nice weather for the opening day. Longtime member George F. Rabuck died March 3 in Mercy Hospital in Altoona. He was 87. George attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church and was a member of our branch for more than 40 years. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family. May he rest in peace. One more note of interest: our Branch Treasurer Bob Jones has entered the Pittsburgh Marathon to be held in May. He will be one of about 4,000 people running in this 26.2-mile event. Bob has been in training for quite some time. This will be the third year he has entered this marathon. He now has a total of eight marathons to his credit. The best of luck to you, Bob, and we hope you place high in the standings. Branch 8155 Enhaut/Steelton, PA The members of our branch voted to donate $100 to St. John’s Church’s Easter collection. Our members also helped with an appreciation party held on March 17. Branch President Steve Sipos was elected to represent Branch 8155 at the Area Delegate District 46 election meeting. The district will send one delegate and one alternate delegate to the General Convention to be held this September in Pittsburgh. Branch 8164 Steubenville, OH William Penn Branch 8164 recently attended Mass at St. Anthony Church, followed by a St. Patrick’s Day breakfast in the rectory hall. Hostesses were Julia D’Aurora and Matilda Mauer. A short meeting followed. Get well wishes were sent to Branch President Pete Buffone and Albert DiNicola.
