Credit Union members also enjoy competitive interest rates on their savings. But savings plans and insurance protection are not all our Association gives its members. Over the years our society has developed many social, athletic, benevolent and cultural programs which enhance the overall quality of our members’ lives. Fraternal Benefits For the past 48 years the Annual National Bowling Tournament and Scholarship Days has served as the highlight of our society’s social calendar. Members from many branches join together each Memorial Day weekend for three days of fraternalism and fun. The weekend also focuses attention on the important work of the William Penn Fraternal Association Scholarship Foundation. Dozens of young members receive tens of thousands of dollars in scholarship awards each year from the Foundation, helping them to pay the costs of higher education and realize their career goals. The Association supplemented its national sports program in 1984 when it sponsored the first William Penn Association National Golf Tournament. This mid-summer event has since become one of the more popular programs sponsored by our society. Additional recreational opportunities exist for members at Penn Scenic View, the Association’s camp located in the Laural Highlands of Pennsylvania. First opened in 1977, Penn Scenic View offers members a place to get away from their everyday cares. The camp can accommodate groups of 2 to 80 and is just minutes away from two excellent ski resorts. Scenic View has served as the site for many branch picnics and parties, as well as several programs conducted by the Home Office. One of these programs, our Hungarian Language Camp, is an outgrowth of the William Penn’s commitment to its Hungarian roots. After a highly successful inaugural session in 1990, the Hungarian Language Camp is scheduled to return this year for the first full week of August. The camp provides practical instruction in the Hungarian language at a reasonable cost. The Home is our society’s largest ongoing fraternal project. The Association acquired the Home in 1983 and since that time the Home has strengthened its reputation as a place where the elderly can feel secure and live with dignity. A national historic landmark, our Home is also famous for its architectual excellence and collections of Native American and Early 20th Century American artifacts. Serving The Community The William Penn Home is home to Association members, as well as non-members. In that sense, it serves as one of our society’s many projects which benefit the communities in which we are located. The Association has a long history of service to the general community. Almost from our beginnings our members, branches and national headquarters have supported charitable causes and volunteered to help those in need. The Association annually supports the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh’s fund drive for Children’s Hospital. Our branches conduct visits to shutins, nursing homes and homes for the retarded. And our members volunteer thousands of hours and donate thousands of dollars each year to projects in the local communities. Promoting Our Heritage Our support for our communities and dedication to our members is matched only by our Association’s love for its Hungarian heritage. In addition to our Hungarian Language Camp, the William Penn is a proud sponsor of countless projects and programs which promote and foster Hungarian history, culture and heritage. The William Penn Association Magyar Folk Dancers of McKeesport, Pa., the Branch 18 Hungarian Dancers of Detroit, and dance groups sponsored by local branches thrill audiences with the color and energy of Hungarian folk dance. Since the 1920’s, the Association and its members have been among the strongest supporters of the Hungarian Classroom at the University of Pittsburgh. The Association also was a major contributor to the Hungarian Heritage Center in New Brunswick, N.J., which opened in 1989. Our Home in Wellsburg has played host to two Hungarian Folk Dance and Folk Music Symposia at which young dancers and musicians refine their talents under the instruction of leading folk artists from Hungary, America and Canada. These and the many dances and programs sponsored by our branches have kept our Hungarian heritage alive in America and have made us a leader in the Hungarian American community. A Fraternal Leader The William Penn is also recognized as a leader in the fraternal benefit system. Many of our National Officers and Directors have held office in the National Fraternal Congress of America and various state fraternal congresses. Through our subsidiary corporation, Computer Specialties Corp., we offer other fraternal societies and businesses the computer services they need to successfully run their operations. With such a wide variety of interests, the William Penn could have easily lost sight of its founding principles. But it has not. Our society has remained focused on the ideas of providing financial security to our members, promoting our heritage and supporting our communities. We think our founding fathers would be proud. Happy Birthday to our great Association. Official Notice Historical Records and Artifacts The William Penn Association is collecting items of historical interest to our Association for inclusion in our historical records and archives. We are seeking artifacts and records of all kinds, such as old records of branch activities, minutes books, uniforms, badges, ribbons, pictures and banners. We are interested in any items relating to the William Penn, Verhovay, Rákóczi and all of the other fraternal benefit societies which have merged with us during our 105-year history. If you have any such items, please contact: E. E. Vargo, National President William Penn Association 709 Brighton Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15233 Phone: (412) 231-2979
