Pagfe 6, William Pfenn Life, October 1990 Branch News Several members of Branch 18 Detroit enjoy some of the food served during the branch’s annual outing at Bob La island. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn D. Ward Branch 14 Corresponding Secretary After the summer recess, Branch 14 is gearing up for another active year end. The annual Christmas party will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at the West Side Hungarian Reformed Church. Almost 200 members enjoyed the outing at Geauga Lake Park on Aug. 12. Many members congregated at the pavilion and enjoyed a picnic lunch. Our monthly meetings resumed Sept. 12. Meetings will be held the second Wednesday of each month beginning at 7:30 p.m. at 4116 Rockside Road, Independence, Ohio. All Branch 14 members are welcome to attend and help plan our activities. Branch 18 Detroit, MI By Barbara Ann House Branch 18 Secretary Our Bob Lo outing was held on Aug. 19 and is now a fun memory. 1 would like to thank Peter Bandy and Tom House for bringing all the essentials to the island in their private "yachts.” I don’t know what we would have done without their help. Once again, the salona sandwiches were more popular than the hot dogs. The weather was horrendous, but the worst of the rain held off until we were finished eating. The most important members didn’t even notice the rain. Those members were, of course, all the invited members age 12 and under who enjoyed their day. Thanks to all for your support. We hope that next year we can say a few more prayers for good weather. I am so glad you enjoyed your ride home, Darlene. I hope we can do that again. Our annual Sureti Bal is scheduled for Oct. 13. Please contact Steve at the club for reservations. This is always a sellout, so call as soon as possible. Don’t forget the Deki Lakatos Sándor concert scheduled for Nov. 10 at Lincoln Park High School. Reservations are a must. This is a lovely affair and should not be missed. Our family Christmas party will be held Dec. 1. Mark this on your calendars. Particulars will appear in future reports. Congratulations to Sam Vespremi who was recently installed as a director of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. Good luck, Sam. We wish you all the best. Remember, your club meets the first Monday of every month, and the Ladies’ Auxiliary meets the third Monday of every month. Your presence at these meetings would be most welcome. Come and have a voice in the running of your club. Well, we all started bowling. How did you do? Thank goodness we have almost eight months to practice until next year’s national bowling tournament. Until next month, stay healthy and let me know about your happenings. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Peg Sándor Branch 28 Secretary-Treasurer Now that the summer picnics are all over, we all can resume our meetings. And with school and bowling beginning, it is time for us to start thinking about the 48th national bowling tournament. We are happy to know it will again be held in Pittsburgh. As this was being written, we were looking forward to Heritage Day here. Under the leadership of Irene Nemeth and Dolores Gran, the committee was working hard to make sure it was a success. We want to wish a happy birthday to Kathy Novak and Mary Tollas. Irene Tomory had as her guest her daughter-in-law, also named Irene Tomory, from Alaska. On a sad note, our Irene and her sister lost their brother Joe Polya. Joe was originally from Campbell, moved to Colorado, and ended up in Alaska. We also extend our sympathy to the Youngrass family on the death of Dominic’s brother. May he and Joe rest in peace. We encourage all our members to listen to the "Souvenirs of Hungary” program on radio station WKTL 90.7 FM in Struthers, for the community bulletin board. You’ll hear all the latest information on events taking place in Youngstown and neighboring cities. The show is hosted by the Endre Check family. Branch 89 Homestead, PA William Seifert, a member of Branch 89 and an employee of Nabisco’s Pittsburgh Bakery, was recently honored by his employer for working 46 years without missing a single day due to illness. Bill cites only two absences that even the most hardnosed taskmaster could forgive: his service in the Korean War (Bill’s proud of his veteran status and is an officer of his local American Legion), and a three-day leave after his parents’ funeral. Bill said he has always been blessed with good health and loves his job as a hi-lo operator at the plant. He even showed up for work when the plant had closed down in 1950 after three feet of snow fell on Pittsburgh. He and his wife Theresa are the proud parents of five children and are equally proud of their William Seifert of Branch 89 has never taken a sick day in 46 years. eight grandchildren. Bill was commander of American Legion Post 5 from 1987 to 1988. He is an active member of St. Bede Church in Point Breeze and is active in local politics. Branch 89 would like to commend Bill for his faithful service to his employer, his fellow man and his community. Branch 129 Columbus, OH By Arpad Sibrik Branch 129 Coordinator On Sunday, Sept. 16, Branch 129 held its annual family picnic at Jeffrey Club. About 150 members and guests attended. Plenty of fried chicken, brats, scalloped potatoes, salads, luscious pastries and refreshments greeted the many good appetites. A surprise birthday celebration was held for Mr. and Mrs. Dave George with a beautiful banner and cake from the children and grandchildren. Dave turned 86 and Margaret 79. Dave said they have been married for 61 years. Congratulations and many happy returns. Thanks to the Home Office and National President E. E. Vargo for the nice door prizes. Dave George also donated potted plants for door prizes. We thank all the members and officers of Branch 129 for their help at the picnic and all other functions. Dates to remember for the coming months: Oct. 10, branch meeting at Leonardo’s; Dec. 8, branch Christmas party at VFW #495; and Dec. 12, election of branch officers for 1991 at Leonardo’s. Hull Branch 189 Reporter Branch 189 held a picnic on Sept. 16 at the club. It was to be held at Suntan Golf Course, but, due to the weather, we held it at the club. Despite this change, we had a large turnout. The club furnished the meat, buns and beverages. The women members brought a covered dish or dessert. The winner of the bushel of cheer raffle was Eddy Counts. The event was a total success. Our Friday night steak fries and Sunday morning breakfasts are going just great. A big thank you goes to our kitchen manager Mary Gulling. Great job, Mary. Other events coming up include the Oct. 19 appearance of High Horse, a local band, at the club following the Friday night steak fry. Come out and join in the fun. On Oct. 22 there will be a bus trip to the Cincinnati-Cleveland football game. Tickets are $35 per person. Watch for our November newsletter for information on events for the holidays. Branch 296 Springdale, PA By Ron Balia Branch 296 President Branch 296 held its annual picnic Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Assumption Church picnic grounds in Leechburg, Pa. A big pat on the back goes to Mr. Szuch from Leechburg who was chairman of this year’s picnic and to his wonderful wife who made and donated a handmade afghan. Food and music were enjoyed by all. A 50-50 raffle drawing was held, and the winning ticket was drawn by our Association’s National President E. E. Vargo. The lucky winner was our agency manager Earl Webb. Emma Balia was the winner of the drawing for the handmade afghan. We at Branch 296 wish to thank all who helped by purchasing tickets for these drawings. Branch President Ron Balia would also like to give his personal thanks to the following: the members of the Official Family who took time out of their busy schedules to attend; National President E. E. Vargo and his wife Betty; National Director Elmer W. Toth; Assistant Treasurer Robert A. Kapinus and his wife Barbara; all the ladies who made special pastries; and, last but not least, the hard-working women in the kitchen and the men who also shared in this labor of love. The real meaning of fraternalism touched our hearts when we saw all the familiar faces of those who traveled a good distance to share with their fellow William Penn members this day of fellowship. Our deepest thanks to all those who participated and made this event a truly special day for members and guests. We extend a special invitation to all our members to attend our next branch meeting. Branch 349 Weirton, WV Congratulations to Branch 349 member Mrs. Julia Egyed who recently celebrated her 89th birthday at the William Penn Home Community Festival with her family. A resident of Follansbee, W.Va., Julia has seven children, 22 grandchildren and 26 greatgrandchildren. Julia remains active in the Hungarian community. She is often seen wearing her beautiful Hungarian costume. A 55-year member of the William Penn, she is also a member of the Tri-State Hungarian Social Club of Mingo Junction, Ohio, and the Ohio Valley Hungarian American Cultural Society. She also keeps herself busy cooking and baking many delicious Hungarian goodies, enough to keep two freezers filled year round. Branch 352 Coraopolis, PA By Dianne A.
