February 1990, William Penn Life, Page 7 The children of Branches 71 and 89 gather to help lead guests at the branches’ joint Christmas party in the singing of Christmas carols. The children of Branch 59 meet with Santa Claus under the Christmas tree at the branch’s annual family Christmas party. Continued from Page 6 When the children arrived, we were ready with a craft project —everyone got to decorate their own Christmas tree. But the best part of the afternoon was when Santa arrived. All of the children must have been good because Santa brought some terrific gifts for each of them. Everyone had some refreshments and spent a truly enjoyable afternoon. We want to remind everyone that our regular monthly meetings will resume in February. Here’s looking forward to a great new year! Branch 24 Chicago, IL By Betty Akai Branch 24 Reporter We are happy to report that our Christmas party was very enjoyable. We had a nice group of adults and children. Our program was short, but very nice. Branch President Elizabeth A- kai welcomed all the guests. Our program began with the singing of Christmas carols from our lovely William Penn carol books. While we were singing, good ol’ Santa arrived with goodies for everyone. James Akai made an excellent Santa Claus. The officers and members of Branch 24 thank the Home Office for its generous contribution which made this great party possible. Our branch also recently elected its officers for 1990. They are: Elizabeth Akai, president; Charles Akai, vice president; Bert Garszik, secretary; Betty Harty, treasurer; and Marty Berták, auditor. We congratulate Charles and Betty Akai who celebrated their 60th anniversary with a family gathering on Nov. 16, 1989. The Akais have nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The Akais have been very active in Branch 24 affairs for many years. Branch 26 Sharon, PA By Betty Panin Branch 26 President Branch 26 held its annual Christmas party on Dec. 17 at the Holy Trinity R. C. Auditorium in Farrell, Pa. We had a very nice turnout in spite of the snow and wintry conditions. After a buffet of tasty fresh kolbász, made the day before by the men’s Holy Name Society, we enjoyed sauerkraut and many side dishes and ended with pastries and refreshments. Our entertainment was by Patches the Clown who performed some magic and made animal balloons. But the big hit with the children was the face painting. Finally, Santa Claus arrived and passed out treats of candy, fruit, money and novelties supplied by the Home Office. Special thanks to those who assisted in making this annual Christmas party another great success. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Peg Sándor Branch 28 Secretary-Treasurer Branch 28 held its annual family Christmas party on Dec. 9 at the American Hungarian Home in Youngstown. It was a great success. Santa (Steve Novak) and Mrs. Claus (Ruth Fabian) greeted all the children and guests. Following a showing of cartoons, Santa and Mrs. Claus led the group in the singing of Christmas carols. They then passed out bags of goodies and gifts of money to the children. Everyone enjoyed a lunch of sloppy Joes, macaroni salad with all the trimmings and many delicious cookies and cupcakes. We must say that Helen Kalucsky makes the best cupcakes. Many thanks to the Home Office for helping to make this party such a success. Thanks also to all our helpers, Kay and Kathy Novak, Irene Tomory, Irene Nemeth and Mary Tollas. Let’s not forget the men, Steve Novak, Steve Sándor and Gabe Nameth. Election of branch officers took place Dec. 17. Our officers for 1990 are: Steve Sándor, president; Steve Novak, vice president; Peg Sándor, secretary-treasurer; and Kay Novak and John Kalucsky, auditors. The officers were installed by Branch Coordinator Gabe Nameth. Congratulations and good luck to all. Our deepest sympathies go to Irene Tomory and her sons for the sudden death of her husband Julius. May he rest in peace. Congratulations to Mary and Alex Tollas on the birth of their grandson who is sure to become another new William Penn member. Our next branch meeting will be held Feb. 18 at Steve Sandor’s home. We hope all had a joyous holiday season. Branch 59 Windber, PA By Dorothy Gall Branch 59 Coordinator Branch 59 held its Christmas party on Dec. 10. Festive decorations and happy spirits created a nice holiday atmosphere for the party. Refreshments were served and everyone joined in to sing Christmas carols. The visit from Santa Claus with the treats made the time extra-special for the children. John Orris was the winner of a fruit basket donated by Riverside Market in Windber. Thank you to Rose Orris, Ann Demko and Peggy Marone for helping with the decorating and serving. We had a very enjoyable party. Our election of officers was held prior to the party. Those elected were: John Orris, president; Dorothy Gall, secretary; Margaret Marone, treasurer; and Louis Vanyo and David Trusch, auditors. Toth Branch 89 Reporter On Dec. 17 Branch 71 and Branch 89 once again held a joint Christmas party at the Homeville Fire Hall in West Mifflin, Pa. Although the weather did not cooperate, we were very pleased at the great turnout we had for the party. Each year we are amazed at the excitement that the children generate. As they entered the hall all the children were Branch News Charles and Betty Akai of Branch 24 celebrate 60 hap fry years together. given a bag of goodies and refreshments. National Director and Branch 89 President Elmer W. Toth welcomed all the guests on behalf of the two branches. He introduced Roger Nagy, vice chairman of the Board of Directors and president of Branch 71. Also in attendance were William C. Kohut, former national director and current trustee of Penn’s Scenic View, and former National Secretary Gus G. Nagy and his wife Betty. It was good to see Gus at the party since he was recently released from the hospital after having corrective hip surgery. The children were entertained by the "Puppet Maker” who they enjoyed thoroughly. While awaiting the arrival of Santa they sang Christmas carols and other seasonal songs. Santa entered the hall with a big "Ho! Ho! Ho!” He mingled with the children and later distributed gifts and candy to all the children. The adults also received a box of candy. A buffet luncheon and a yuletide punch were served which was enjoyed by all. We would like to thank all those who helped make the party a success. We also would like to thank all the directors for the Christmas party allotment that enabled us to have a nice affair. Branch 89 is pleased to announce that William Stranahan assumed the position of director of maintenance at Montefiore Hospital on Jan. 1. Prior to this, he was the assistant director of maintenance at Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Bill is a member of Branch 89. Congratulations. Branch 76 Philadelphia, PA By Steve Szemes Branch 76 Coordinator Our branch meeting and Christmas party were held Dec. 9 at the Philadelphia Hungarian Club.
