Casey proclaimed the week of June 10 to 16 as "Fraternal Week” in Pennsylvania during ceremonies in the Governor’s Reception Room on June 11. Officers and directors representing many of the fraternal benefit societies domiciled in the commonwealth were on hand to witness the signing of the proclamation. Among those present was National President E. E. Vargo. The Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress includes some 80 societies, with a total membership in Pennsylvania of more than 900,000 making the state the largest fraternal life insurance member of the National Fraternal Congress of America. Gov. Casey welcomed the fraternalists and recognized the significance of the fraternal benefit system. The Governor read the proclamation which stated in part that "the fraternal benefit system, with its diverse membership, is an important force in Pennsylvania, both for the services provided to its members and for the efforts the societies make to keep alive the cultural heritage of our Commonwealth.” He praised fraternal societies for adhering to the principles on which they were founded. "Fraternal societies are guided by that same spirit of friendship, mutual assistance and community service,” he said. The Governor stressed the contributions fraternal societies and their members make to their communities. He particularly noted their efforts toward "guiding our young people and helping those in need.” Gov. Casey.concluded his remarks by inviting all residents of Pennsylvania to join with him in honoring the men and women of the fraternal benefit system and thanking them for the contributions they have made toward improving the quality of life for all people.
