Page 4, William Penn Life, July 1990 Branch News Branch 18 Detroit, MI By Barbara A. House Branch 18 Secretary Can' you believe the bowling tournament is behind us? Congratulations to all the Branch 18 bowlers that did so well. We sure had a nice time. Princess Lanes did an excellent job. They ran a very professional tournament, and their breakfast buffet was super. My team, The Five Friends, bowled with the winning ladies’ team, Five Blind Mice, who represented the Home Office. They were a great bunch of girls, and losing to the first place team wasn’t hard to take. See you next year. Get ready girls! Our branch is sponsoring its second annual trip to Bob Lo on Aug. 19. A reservation form can be found on this page. Please mail it in as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please call the office or any branch officer. The branch card party is Sept. 24. Tickets are $3.50 and can be bought at the club. Buy your tickets now because this affair is always a sellout. We received a letter from Sam and Louise Vespremi updating us on their travels through Europe. They had visited Switzerland, Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria and Hungary and were on their way to Paris when they stopped to write us. They wrote that it was nice to see Hungary again. They said that there were no wire fences or guards along the border entering Hungary. Still, visas were needed to enter and leave Hungary and passports were stamped. Nevertheless, they said it was wonderful to hear the gypsy music and eat the good food at the Beke Hotel. We hope they enjoy the rest of their tour and return home safely. And we hope all our members and friends have a lovely summer. Stay healthy. See you in the fall. Branch 22 Roebling, NJ Even though we have adjourned our meetings for the summer, our activities are still going on. Two local events we will be helping to sponsor this summer are the carnival at Holy Assumption Church in Roebling and, later this summer, Roebling’s Founder’s Day. Founder’s Day is an annual event celebrating the establishment of our fine community. This day is full of events: tours of local historic homes, displays of memorabilia, food booths, hayrides and much more. We’re proud of this effort to keep our town’s history alive. An update on National Vice President Zoltán B. Emri: We’re happy to report he is recovering nicely at home and hopes to Sam Vespremi and his sister Louise Vespremi, both members of Branch 18 Detroit, enjoy a moment at the Rhine Falls on the Swiss-German border. return to work very soon. He wishes to express his sincere thanks to those of you who called or sent cards and letters. It meant a lot to him and his family to know he was being thought of. We hope everyone has a safe and happy summer. See you at the golf tournament this month. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Peg Sándor Branch 28 Secretary-Treasurer (Here I am in my hospital bed trying to get a newsletter out to all our members.) Congratulations to our new national president and all others moving up at the Home Office. Belated anniversary greetings to Joe and Margaret Maty (46 years), Sándor and Mary Tollas (39 years), Andrew and Jean Check, Alex and Mary Nagy, Eugene and Frances Sakasits and all other couples of our branch celebrating recently. We’d also like to send birthday greetings to A1 and Mary Nagy, Imre Magyar and all members who marked their special day recently. The spring season for all those church bazaars, socials, card party’s and dinners is in the past. We are now in the midst of celebrating first communions, graduations, showers and picnics. We have begun planning our branch picnic and will announce the date soon. Our sympathy goes out to the Turner and Ashley families following the recent death of Mrs. Joseph (Theresa) Turner, mother of Joseph Turner Jr. and motherin-law of John Ashley. We also extend our sympathy to the Novak and Tollas families on the sudden death of Anna Novak, sister of our branch vice president and Mary Tollas. May they both rest in peace. The Cantemus Children’s Choir and Piccoli Archi Orchestra performed in Youngstown on June 6. Our branch was well represented in the audience. Our own Kathy Novak served as publicity chairwoman. St. Stephen of Hungary Church of Youngstown will celebrate its 85th anniversary in August. Taryn Papalia, daughter of new members Vicky and Michael Papalia, received a superior rating for a solo performance of Toccatina Op. 27 during the District 5 Junior High School Solo and Ensemble competition. Taryn, 12, and her brother Nathan are piano students (but still prefer baseball). Our past Secretary-Treasurer Irene Nemeth’s granddaughter is graduating from an American high school in Hannau, West Germany. We congratulate her. Our branch meetings are held on the third Sunday of every month. Branch 44 Akron, OH By Elizabeth K. Darago Branch 44 President It’s Branch 44 annual summer picnic time!
