Hungarian Room Comm, names scholarship winner By Jeffrey J. Ward, du.chFc Regional Sales Manager The Ninth Annual William Penn Association Sales Conference was held the week of April 28 aboard the msCostaRiviera, where the society’s outstanding salespeople were recognized for their efforts in 1989. Jeffrey J. Ward, CLU, ChFC was honored for operating the Association’s Agency of the Year. In addition to a society leading 466 applications last year, his agency produced the Rookie of the Year (Joe Jeromos) and last year’s Most Improved Agent (Alan Szabó). Earl Webb qualified for the conference as the manager for the Pittsburgh-West Agency. His most notable accomplishment was his outstanding annuity production which totalled $695,561 of annuity premium. Part-time agents Elmer Toth of Munhall, Pa., Darlene Szatmári of Southgate, Mich, and Ethel Katona of Bridgeport, Conn, also qualified for the trip. Mr. Toth, a member of the Association’s Board of Directors and the leading part-time agent for the past several years, recorded another stellar year. Always a strong annuity producer, he sold 100 applications and just short of one million dollars of life insurance in 1989. Ms. Szatmári completed her first full year of active part-time production with $1,074,067 of life insurance, 68 applications and new life insurance premium of $24,173. We hope for more fine production from her in the future. Ms. Katona qualified for her first sales conference with 56 sales, 14 of which came in the month of December. When she knew she was close to qualifying for the conference, nothing could stop her, she said. Frank J. Wukovits Sr. and William Kovach also qualified for the conference but were unable to attend. Mr. Wukovits, longtime steward of Branch 132 South Bend, had 46 sales with life and annuity premium of $84,000. Like Ethel Katona, Mr. Kovach of Branch 159 Phoenixville, Pa., came on strong when he knew he was close to qualifying. He closed out the year with 37 sales and $45,000 of life and annuity premium. National President E. E. Vargo, FIC, led the meetings, which included discussions on current insurance news, product knowledge and underwriting procedures. There was also a roundtable discussion during which the various qualifiers were able to pick each others’ brains. President Emeritus Elmer Charles attended the meetings, and his knowledge and input were very much appreciated. Contrary to how it may appear, the conference was not all business. The qualifiers, their spouses and guests were able to appreciate the beauty of the western Caribbean and take part in many activities, such as snorkeling, scuba diving and sun bathing. A great time was had by all. PITTSBURGH — The Hungarian Room Committee at the University of Pittsburgh recently presented its 1990 Dr. Samuel Gomory Memorial Award Scholarship to Michael J.
