Page 6, William Penn Life, March 1990 Brooch News Branch 18 Detroit, MI By Barbara Ann House Branch 18 Secretary As usual our two-for-one dinner held on Feb. 11 was a roaring success. It was the biggest ever. Thank you to Steve Szatmári and his crew for all their hard work. Our Annual Champagne Ball was held Feb. 24. We’ll have details about this affair in our next report. Also, the Branch 18 card party will be held March 12. Please book early as this event is always a sell out. Call the club or any board member for tickets. Congratulations to Frank Tima who was appointed Branch 18 official photographer. Frank is also an auditor on the board. In news from our Ladies Auxiliary, congratulations to Mary and Ludwig Gebnar on their 50th anniversary. Congratulations also go to Marjorie and Alex Kato on their 50th. May God bless you with many more years of good health and happiness. We were saddened by the deaths of two of our members: Tillie Yambor, who was a past officer, and Barbara Piszker. Our condolences to both of their families, and may our members rest in peace. A speedy recovery to honorary member Martha Balosé. She would love to hear from her many friends. She is now recuperating at home. The Ladies Auxiliary annual card party will be held on April 30. Please see any member for tickets. Raffle prize donations are needed and very welcome. By now you have all the bowling papers you will need. Please get your teams together as soon as possible. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at the tournament. Stay healthy and hope to see you at the card parties. Ivancso Sr. and Julius Feyes, auditors. Elected to the newly created post of branch fraternal coordinator was Maggie Ivancso. Branch 27 will hold its meetings on the first Sunday of each month beginning at 2:00 p.m. March 4 and April 1 are important dates to remember. On those days we will be forming our bowling teams which will compete in the upcoming national bowling tournament to be held May 26 and 27 in Pittsburgh. Last week we had guests from Greenbush, Mich. — Frank and Gizi Csiszár — who spent the evening with us. They were on their way to Pittsburgh to see Gizi’s sister Goldie and her brothers. We played pinochle until the wee hours of the morning. Jula and Dottie Feyes spent the holiday season in Buffalo with their son Jeff, his lovely wife Joan and their children Chris and Emily. They say that the Niagara Falls are just beautiful. Dottie Gall in Windber, Pa., is doing a great job as branch coordinator of Branch 52 there. My nephew Steve Gall Jr. tells me that all of our friends are doing just fine. For your insurance needs, please write me or call me at 691- 9641. Let me know what’s going on in your area. We’re looking forward to seeing all of you again at the bowling tournament. Until next month, take care. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Peg Sándor Branch 28 Secretary-Treasurer In last month’s report, we forgot to mention that we gave out four door prizes that were donated by Steve and Peg Sándor, and that Mary Torok gave a beautiful handmade afghan to Mrs. Santa. And, we forgot all about Mr. Santa. Well, maybe next year. It is time to start working on our bowling teams for this year’s tournament and banquet. Since it is so close to home, we should have a number of teams and a good showing at the banquet. All those interested should call Peg Sándor at 755-9105. Recuperating from hip surgery are Joe Maty and Frank Torok. Also, Mary Burkosky is recovering from a fractured knee cap. We wish a speedy recovery to all. Gabe Nameth, our branch coordinator, is basking in the sunshine of Florida at this writing. Have a good time, Gabe. Our members and friends might be interested in knowing that many of the churches in our area are having their hurka and kolbász dinners and sales now. The March 15 commemoration will be held at St. Stephen of Hungary Church on March 11. Happy Birthday to all members celebrating their special day from December through March. Branch 44 Akron, OH By Marilyn T. Darago Branch 44 Treasurer Branch 44 held its family Christmas party on Dec. 10 at the CYO Hall, located at Hóban High School. Since the CYO sponsors an adult day care center, the hall was decorated with handmade Christmas crafts. A Christmas tree was likewise adorned. As members arrived, they noticed an additional traditional touch — 12 beautiful poinsettia plants on the tables. Many were surprised and delighted when they were given away as door prizes. Alan Szabó, special William Penn representative for our area, led the members and children in the singing of Christmas carols. Chuckles the Clown then arrived and entertained the children and adults alike with his magic show and balloon sculptures. Chuckles helped Santa Claus distribute Christmas presents and candy to the excited branch children. Calm returned to the hall when Chuckles left. Members then adjourned to the dining room for a buffet luncheon. Members provided the salads and desserts which completed the assortment of food available. Lively conversation and the chatter of children’s voices filled the dining room, indicating all were having an enjoyable time. The members of Branch 44 want to thank the Home Office for its generous donation which made this party possible. Our concerned members, however, did not forget those who are less fortunate than we are. Members brought canned goods, pasta and rice for our Christmas baskets. With these donations, plus matching funds from the Home Office, the branch was able to provide holiday baskets to three senior citizens in the Akron area who were in need. Branch Auditor Alex Darago and his son Joseph shopped for Otto Leonard, past president of Branch 336 (left), joins Frank Fabiankovitz and Steve Faber in cutting down a small portion of the barbed wire fence along the Hungarian border. The removal of the wire symbolized the country’s movement toward a more democratic form of government. the fresh items included in the baskets (ham, chicken, fruits and vegetables, etc.) and delivered the baskets.
