Branch 18 Detroit, MI By Barbara Ann House Branch 18 Reporter George Sipos was the surprised honoree at a retirement party held at the William Penn Club on Oct. 18. George retired after working for more than 30 years as a draftsman. The party was hosted by his son Steve, his daugther Carol and his daughter-in-law Terry. Steve and Terry have one daughter, Katie, who is George’s only grandchild. George and his lovely wife Mary celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary in October, and George will celebrate his 65th birthday in November. Congratulations to a lovely family. The Budapest Gypsies recently made a much requested appearance at the Club while they were in Dearborn for a several-week engagement at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The group very graciously performed at the Club three times, each time before a packed house. The William Penn Association Hungarian Dancers from Branch 18 performed with the group three times at the Hyatt. The group put on a beautiful show, and we can not wait until they return. We welcome back Sam and Louise Vespremi who recently returned from a trip to Hungary. It was Louise’s second trip and Sam’s first. Sam loves to talk about all that they saw and did, including the time Louise was given a bouquet of flowers for her birthday by a Hungarian admirer. My mom, Irene Gall Korpák, and I also recently returned from Hungary. This was my fifth trip since 1980 and my mother’s 15th since 1969. Once we recover from the jet lag, we’ll be ready to go back again. Many changes are taking place in Hungary. It was an exciting time to be there. You all must go at least once. Club Manager Steve Szatmári and his crew have another busy month planned for us, following the huge success of our annual Sureti Bal. Our new little dancers were the hit of that event, thanks to the efforts of Darlene Szatmári. Our club continues to offer its roast duck dinner, prime rib dinner and popular wooden platter dinner. It also is accepting reservations for your holiday parties. To make reservations, or even offer suggestions, call Steve at the Club. Our dancers have returned from their very successful tour of Florida where they were received by wonderfully appreciative audiences. Thanks go to Rena, Darlene and the dancers for all their hard work and dedication. Julia and Steve Danko have made their annual migration to Florida. Have a great winter. You’ll be missed. And, finally, congratulations to John and Diane Kanyo on the birth of their first child, a lovely baby girl called Jennifer Marie.
