At the beginning of the mass, the cardinal was officially greeted in Hungarian by the Rev. Paul Bolvary, administrator of St. Ann’s, and in English by Robert Kapinus, president of Branch 34. Rev. Varsányi, Rev. Bolvary, the Rev. Ladislaus Kis-Rigo, the cardinal’s secretary, and eight other American priests assisted Cardinal Paskai in celebrating the mass. The mass also included music by the Southminster Presbyterian Church Bellringers of Mount Lebanon, Pa. Following mass, the cardinal received a loud ovation as he entered the church’s social hall for a dinner in his honor. During the dinner, Allegheny County Commissioner Lawrence Dunn proclaimed Cardinal Paskai an honorary citizen of the county and presented him with a key to the city of Pittsburgh. National President Stephen G. Danko welcomed the cardinal on behalf of the William Penn and Hungarian Americans in the Pittsburgh area. He also presented the cardinal with a donation from the Association to help cover expenses incurred by the cardinal during his visit to America. In return, Cardinal Paskai presented to Mr. Danko a copy of the book Hungary by Karoly Szelenyi. The cardinal inscribed the book with a message thanking the William Penn and its members for their hospitality during his visit. Afterwards, Cardinal Paskai mingled with dinner guests, stopping to chat briefly with many of the 270 people in the packed social hall. Earlier in the day, the cardinal met with Bishop Donald Wuerl of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh and Byzantine Archbishop Stephen Kocisko. The three shared lunch with other local religious leaders at SS. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Seminary on Pittsburgh’s North Side. Following lunch, the cardinal met briefly with reporters then traveled to Elizabeth Township to visit the Divine Redeemer Motherhouse. Cardinal Paskai’s visit to this country began Sept. 21 when he arrived in Boston. During his stay he traveled to about 24 cities in the Northeast and Midwest, visiting about two dozen churches and meeting the four American cardinals and other religious leaders. He returned to Hungary from Washington on Oct. 18. Allegheny County Commissioner Lawrence Dunn presents the cardinal with a certificate of honorary citizenship and a key to the city of Pittsburgh.
