Credit unions celebrate growth The William Penn Association Federal Credit Union will join credit cooperatives around the world in celebrating International Credit Union Week Oct. 15 to 21. The week is set aside each year to celebrate the steady growth of the member-owned financial movement. The highlight of the week will be International Credit Union Day, Oct. 19. The third Thursday in October is traditionally set aside to honor pioneers and volunteers of the credit union movement. The theme for this year’s celebration, "Credit Unions: One Voice,” represents both the uniqueness and unity of credit unions. Credit Union Day starts in Fiji, where the sun first rises over a credit union country. As the sun follows its westward course, the other countries join in, with many celebrating the occasion with candle-lighting ceremonies. The final candles are lit in the Hawaiian Islands, as the sun sets on Credit Union Day. "During this time, we step back from our daily routines and remember those who worked so hard to make this movement possible,” said Michael J. Judge, president of the Pennsylvania Credit Union League. "The movement speaks with one voice when we welcome those who wish to obtain superior financial services at affordable prices.” The League, based in Harrisburg, provides support services to Pennsylvania credit unions. While the William Penn Credit Union serves its individual members, it is also part of the League, as well as a national and worldwide cooperative system. At each level, the members join together and speak with one united voice. Credit unions are not-forprofit, financial cooperatives owned ind controlled by their members. Any income a credit union earns is returned to the membejs in the form of new or improved services and better rates on loans and savings accounts. Assets at the 15,700 credit unions nationwide grew by 8 percent to $196 million during 1988. Credit union membership across the country rose to 58.6 million.
