October 1989, William Penn Life, Page 5 Young members of Branch 18 gather together during the branch’s recent outing at Bob Lo island. These new members of Branch 18’s 50-year member club were honored at a recent dinner held at the Hungarian Social Club. Branch 1 Bridgeport, CT July and August were very busy months for the members of Branch 1. During the week of July 16, branch members Benjamin Bero, Byron Bero and Courtney Chapman attended the William Penn Computer Camp held at Penn’s Scenic View in Trent, Pa. The three boys reported having a terrific time and a fun learning experience. Joanne Bero, wife of National Director William J. Bero, also spent the week at the computer camp as a chaperon. The month of July also kickedoff our latest fraternal program. Having become aware of the serious garbage and litter problems that are once again plaguing our communities, Branch 1 has installed garbage cans in numerous locations throughout the Greater Bridgeport area. Each can bears the William Penn logo and the message, "Fraternalism Makes a Difference.” Branch 1 members are responsible for maintaining and emptying the garbarge cans each week. We are proud to report our efforts have made a tremendous difference in the amount of litter normally found in these areas. On Aug. 20, our branch held its "first annual” bacon roast. While billed as the first annual bacon roast, it was actually the continuance of an old tradition established by our founding fathers of the former Rákóczi Aid Association. The ladies of our branch supplied us with some excellent salads and desserts. Hot dogs, hamburgers and, or course, sütni salona, were enjoyed by all. The junior members of the branch enjoyed activities such as swimming and playing games while the adults had an opportunity to talk, laugh, meet new members and renew old acquaintances. Our thanks to all who contributed their efforts and goodies to this successful event. The upcoming months will find us busily discussing and preparing for other fraternal activities. Among the various activities we will be holding are our second annual New Year’s Eve Party, details of which will be forthcoming in future issues of the William Penn Life. In the meantime, any questions about your insurance needs or other financial concerns can be handled, as always, with courteous efficiency by Ethel Katona at our local office. Call her at 368-1851. Branch 14 Cleveland, OH By Dawn Ward Brance 14 Corresponding Secretary Branch 14 hosted a dinner for its scholarship recipients and their parents and guests at the beautiful Spanish Tavern restaurant in Brecksville, Ohio, on Aug. 11. Among the 33 guests in attendance were the recipients: Shelly Bauer, Debra Taricska, Susan Oldfield, Karen Perkins, Lori DiLoreto, Kimberly Fischer, Scott DiLoreto, Barbara Scarpelli and Stephen Gulyas. We at Branch 14 are proud to honor all these wonderful students. Almost 200 Branch 14 members enjoyed the annual outing at Geauga Lake Park on Aug. 20. Branch 14 scholarship recipients for 1989: (front) Shelly Bauer, Debra Taricska, Susan Oldfield, Karen Perkins; (middle) Lori DiLoreto, Kimberly Fischer, Scott DiLoreto; (back) Barbara Scarpelli and Stephen Gulyas. Regional Sales Manager Jeff Ward (back, left) presented the awards. The morning rain didn’t dampen the spirits of anyone there. Branch 14 was also well represented at the golf and bowling tournaments this summer. The first meeting after summer recess was held Sept. 13. We express our sympathy to Branch President Rose Kaul on the passing away of her husband Charles. Chuck was a former branch auditor and a wonderful Santa Claus at the branch Christmas parties. We will all miss him. The annual Christmas party will be held Saturday, Dec. 2, at the West Side Hungarian Reformed Church. All children who are members of Branch 14 will receive invitations, but all members are welcome to attend. More information about this party will appear in future issues. It was also decided that Branch 14 will sponsor a dinner-dance May 5, 1990, at St. John Byzantine Church in Solon, Ohio. Chairman Violet Sarosi reports that tickets are all advance sale at $15 each, and it’s B.Y.O.B. Jeff Ward informed everyone at the meeting that the Cleveland Regional Office will be relocating as of Oct. 1 to 7000 S. Edgerton Road, Suite 102, Brecksville, Ohio 44141. The new phone number will be (216) 838-1200. Monthly meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month at the VFW Hall, 4116 Rockside Road, Independence, Ohio. We invite all members to attend and get involved in the planning of the branch’s many activities. Branch 18 Detroit, MI By Barbara Ann House Branch 18 Reporter We at Branch 18 were very pleased to honor 19 new members into the 50-year members club. These members have held insurance policies through the William Penn for at least 50 years. A dinner held in their honor drew 120 guests, including the honorees, their families and board members. Branch President Andrew Toth opened the festivities by welcoming the guests and leading us in prayer. Trustee and former Branch President Steve Danko then introduced all the honorees. Branch Co-Vice Presidents John Molnár and Steve Szatmári presented each honoree with a commemorative plaque and 50- year pin. Steve and his crew, as usual, served an excellent meal that was enjoyed by all. Bright and early the next morning, our members were off to Bob Lo. Special guests of the branch were all our members age 12 and under. This was our first attempt at holding such an activity, and you can rest assured it will become an annual event. We will get an earlier start for next year’s trip so a larger group can take part. We had 70 members join us for a beautiful day at Bob Lo. Don’t think for a moment that former President Danko has been allowed to remain idle; he had a tough time keeping up with the demand for his delicious szalona sandwiches. Nearly everyone has at least two. Thank you, Steve, they were great. We also want to send a special thank you to Tom House and Peter Bandy. Without their boats it would have been impossible to get all the food and beverages to the island. Our own William Penn Association Hungarian Dancers will be on tour in Florida this month. They will present eight performances in eight cities from Oct. 21 to 29. The 11 dancers will be led by group director Darlene Szatmári and chaperoned by Rena Bandy. We hope they have a wonderful time and a safe trip. We are very proud of them. Club events in September included a wooden platter dinner, a roast duck dinner and a 2-for-l dinner. Our card party held Sept. 25 was, as usual, a sellout and a huge success. Thanks to one and all for all your help. Renewal dues for membership in the William Penn Hungarian Social Club for the 1990 season Branch News are now due. They can be paid at the club. I will be in Europe at the time our next newsletter will appear. Please save all your news for me for the next issue. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my wonderful husband Tom House for 23 great years of marriage on Sept. 24.1 love you. Till next time, happy fall and good bowling to all starting the 1990 season. Branch 27 Toledo, OH By Mary Ivancso Branch 27 Coordinator At the Birmingham Ethnic Festival in August, we had the chance to talk with Marge Fuleky. Our congratulations to Marge and her husband Jim on their 50th wedding anniversary. Toledo’s Finest, first-place winners in the handicap and actual pin team events of the 46th William Penn Association National Bowling Tournament, celebrated another achievement by one of the team’s bowlers. Bob Tyukody bowled the first 300 game of the 1988-89 season at RCR Bowling Lanes. His score for the series was 759. Congratulations, Bob. St. Stephen’s Church will host its annual Hungarian Night on Saturday, Oct. 7. His Eminence, László Cardinal Paskai, Primate of Hungary and Archbishop of Esztergom, will celebrate Mass in Hungarian at 5:00 p.m. A special chicken paprikas banquet will follow at 6:30 p.m. in the school hall. During and after the dinner, Frank Boricz will provide the musical entertainment. The Rev. Martin Hernady of St. Stephen’s Church recently returned from a trip to Hungary. During his abscence, the Rev. Ladislaus Vértesaljai, associate pastor of St. Elizabeth’s Church in Budapest, substituted for Rev. Hernady at the Hungarian Masses. We’re already looking forward to the 1990 national bowling tournament. Start organizing your teams. It would be so nice to see all of our friends and new bowlers there.
