September 1989, William Penn Life, Page 5 Branch News National Vice President Zoltán B. Emri (right) and Branch 8020 Secretary- Treasurer Nick Kotik (left) are welcomed to an open house at the Hope House by Administrator Jim Pieffer. Branch 18 Detroit, MI By Barbara Ann House Branch 18 Reporter Welcome home to Marie Pribanyec and Anna Biro. They spent the month of July and part of August in Hungary. They didn’t plan it that way, but they were on the same plane. It’s always nice to have a traveling companion. Welcome Home girls. Louise Vespremi will have a birthday to remember on Sept. 29. She and her brother Sam will be celebrating in Debrecen, Hungary. They are leaving on Sept. 21 and returning in the middle of October. Have a wonderful trip folks and a very Happy Birthday Louise. My mom, Irene Gall Korpák, and 1 are leaving on Sept. 26 for Budapest. We will do a bit of traveling through the country and a lot of family visiting. Save all your news for me until mid- October; that’s when I’ll be home. Our beloved Branch President Emeritus Steve Danko recently underwent major eye surgery. It will be a couple of months before the final results are known. We sure hope you are doing well, Steve, by the time you receive this. Mary Gebnar also had major surgery this summer. God bless you, Mary. Get well soon. Emma Collins is recovering from major surgery now. She has had a recurring problem that we hope she tackles. God bless you and get well. Irene Gall Korpák also had surgery on Aug. 16. By the time you read this, she will be all well. We ask our members to remember all these members in their prayers. I’m sure they would also welcome cards or calls. Branch 22 Roebling, NJ By Jennifer Emri Branch 22 Secretary The members of Branch 22 are sponsoring a STARR bus trip to New York City on Saturday, Oct. 28. There will be an 8:00 a.m. pick-up at the Burlington Center Mall and an 8:30 a.m. pick-up at the Roebling Library. The price of $25 per person includes a visit to the Statue of Liberty, a tour of the city and lots of time to shop at the Southstreet Seaport. Light refreshments will be served on the bus, and we may have time for some games and other surprises. For further information, please contact our branch officers at 499-0969 or 387-8659. We’re looking forward to seeing all of you there. Our branch is still offering the William Penn Hungarian cookbooks for $3 each (mail orders should add 50 cents per book for postage). With Christmas just around the corner, these cookbooks will make a great gift for anyone who wants to try their hand at Hungarian cooking. One of our young members, Scott Cole, was fortunate enough to attend the Association’s first computer instruction camp at Penn’s Scenic View this summer. Well done, Scott. We’re really proud of you and we hope that you had a wonderful learning experience there. We’d like to remind all our members that our regular monthly meetings will resume in September. We meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6:45 p.m. at the Roebling Rescue Squad building. All members are invited to attend. We look forward to meeting the challenges of the 1989-90 season, and we hope to start our season off right with our bus trip. Branch 28 Youngstown, OH By Peg Sándor Branch 28 Reporter Branch 28’s meeting, which was originally scheduled for the third Sunday of this month, has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a future date. We decided to postpone our meeting so that it would not interfere with the Hungarian Heritage festival scheduled for that day. The festival will be held from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. and is being sponsored by the American Hungarian Club on Donald Avenue. Admission is free. The festival will feature Hungarian food and delicious pastries. We enjoyed the Family Festival held Aug. 6 in Wellsburg, W.Va. It was nice to meet and see some of our old friends, like Mr. and Mrs. Gus Nagy, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Fodor, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Charles, Mr. and Mrs. A1 Vargo, and Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Danko. We also finally met Managing Editor John Lovász. Frank Konya recently returned home from the hospital. We hope you are feeling better. We also welcome home Julius and Irene Tomory who returned from a trip to Alaska. Our branch was deeply saddened by the death of Pat Nameth, wife of Branch 28 Coordinator Gabe Nameth. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family. May she rest in peace. Steve Novak, our branch vice president, will be celebrating his 65th birthday and retirement soon. He will finally be a true senior citizen. A party for the immediate family will be hosted by his wife Kay and daughter Kathy. We hope you enjoy your retirement, Steve. The Hungarian churches and societies held their annual Hungarian Day Picnic at Shady Run Grove on Aug. 13. Among the huge crowd attending the event were Steve and Peg Sándor who were celebrating their 32nd wedding anniversary that day. Branch 51 Passaic, NJ By Ernest Mozer Branch 51 Coordinator On Saturday, Nov. 11, Branch 51 will hold a dinner-dance at the American-Hungarian Citizens Club, 21 New Schley St., Garfield, N.J. The dinner will feature traditional Hungarian food served family style. Music will be supplied by the famous Gypsy Joe Orchestra, thus guaranteeing a most enjoyable fraternal evening. For reservations and information please call Art Barillo at (201) 796-8925 or Ernie Mozer at (201) 471-9852, after 5:30 p.m. Branch 129 Columbus, OH Branch 129 will hold a special picnic for all its members on Sunday, Sept. 17, at Jeffrey Park. The picnic will be held from 1:30 to 6:00 p.m. and is free to all William Penn members. Nonmembers may also join us for a $5 per person donation. The branch will provide hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages. Guests are asked to bring a covered dish for the buffet table. Many William Penn members were among those attending a wonderful picnic July 30 hosted by the Hungarian Cultural Society. More than 300 guests turned out for the event held at the Heimat Haus. One of the highlights of the day was the music provided by the Hungarian orchestra from Cleveland. We were also pleasantly surprised to see some fellow William Penn members from the Dayton area. We also had an enjoyable time at the national golf tournament held in July. It was great to meet and see so many of our fellow members. Branch 132 South Bend, IN Our club held its Annual Homecoming Picnic on Saturday, Aug. 5, on the club grounds. Guests enjoyed delicious homemade Hungarian sausage, goulash, langalo and all kinds of refreshments. The festive affair featured many games for both young and old plus the music of the Seasons Orchestra. At this time we would like to send many thanks to those dedicated club members who worked so hard for days in order to make our participation in the recent Ethnic Festival a success. We are proud of each and every one of them. As of late July, the William Penn men’s softball team had a record of 12 wins and 4 losses with six games remaining in the season. They were entered in a semi-state tournament with a chance to advance to a state tournament. We hope to have more good news about our team to pass along in our next report. The lifeblood of our club continues to be bowling. We need help in organizing leagues for both men and women. Please call either the office at 287-8245 or the club room at 237-9171. The Junior League is also seeking bowlers between the ages of 8 and 17. The Junior League bowls on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. We are also asking our members to help us by participating in and promoting our activities. All ideas, suggestions and recommendations are welcome. Please attend our meetings which are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the club. For all your insurance needs, please call Frank J. Wukovits Sr. at 287-8245. He can help you select the William Penn plans that are right for you and your family. Branch 296 Springdale, PA By Pat Balia Branch 296 Reporter Branch 296 will host a special bacon roast on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the United Church of Christ located on Walters Lane, Springdale. The festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will include plenty of delicious Hungarian food, refreshments, fun and fraternal fellowship. We hope that this month’s get together will match the success of our last bacon roast held earlier this summer. That event drew about 40 Branch 296 members plus a number of special guests, including National President Stephen G. Danko, National Secretary E. E. Vargo, National Vice President Zoltán B. Emri, and Branch 88 Coordinator Alex Chobody and his son. We invite all William Penn members to join us for our September bacon roast. We look forward to seeing you Sept. 19. Branch 8020 McKees Rocks, PA By William Arbanas Branch 8020 President Branch 8020 recently made a donation to the Hope House so that the home can continue to serve as a residence for the elderly. The donation was made during an open house held at Hope House on July 9. Branch President William Arbanas presented the gift to Hope House Administrator Jim Pieffer. On hand for the presentation was National Vice President Zoltán B. Emri. The home, operated by the Presbyterian Church, was once the home of nuns serving St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic School.
